Each one is full of artefacts and historic objects and peopled by costumed staff who talk to you as if they are actually from that period in history. It gives the whole place a lovely atmosphere and is a lot more interesting, especially for children, than looking at objects in glass cases and reading information cards.

...a great day out is Beamish open air museum. Situated in the north east of England Beamish has won British museum of the year award not only for the U.K but for Europe too. Advertised as where the past comes to life Beamish will take you back in time to the 1800's and 1900's. Getting there. ***************** Beamish is situated in county Durham. ...300 acres of beautiful countryside Beamish is a museum with a difference. It really is like stepping back in time. Part of the area is dedicated to 1825 where you will find Pockerly manor house and farm. Once the home of a yeoman farmer and his family Pockerly manor is exactly as it would have been in 1825. The house has no electricity but is lit by candlelight. All the rooms are furnished with genuine objects from the period. Staff in costume are ...

...day, it was off to Beamish Museum, since I hadn't been there since I had taken a class of children, and knew it would be somewhere Little Miss and her friend would enjoy Beamish museum is an Open air museum and is advertised as a place where "the past comes to life"; by the past, it means specifically 1800s and 1900s. It is set in over 300 acres of countryside, so the great thing is that even if it is the height of the tourist season, you can "lose ...
...**How to get there** Obviously, we know where it is, but for someone who was unsure, I always think the best way to find a place is on an internet route finder. Failing this, the museum is easy to find by following the A1m and exiting at Junction 63, then following the signs for the museum; they are actually there from the junction. You know you are at the museum when you go under the large metal bridge structure, and so begins your "in another ...

Victorian Nostalgia

Advantages: Pure Nostalgia, and a Great day out
Disadvantages: Not a one

...England Open Air Museum at Beamish in County Durham has won many prestigious awards since it’s opening some 30 years ago. Unless you have been and seen for yourself, you will not realise just what an ambitious project this actually is. The objective that they have set themselves is to have a living and working environment based on life in Victorian England in the North East. I have been many times and find that the hours fly past, leaving you ...
...and watch the “population” of Beamish pass by. Soldiers, sailors, and nannies with their wards can pass you at any time, all in authentic costume. Look out for the Victorian Fun fair complete with merry-go-round, coconut shy, toffee apples, Wurlitzer and other attractions of the times. Construction of houses and equipment is on an ongoing basis, so there is always something new to see each time. Attention to detail is paramount with them, ...

Viewing the past through rose tinted eyes

Advantages: First person interpretation, an entire day out, suitable for all ages
Disadvantages: Expensive, tends to take a "golden old days" view of the past

Beamish - the North of England Open Air Museum - is situated in County Durham, close to the cities of Durham and Newcastle. As a museum studies student, I visited Beamish last year on a jaunt (sorry, educational visit), and am now going to exploit this opportunity to write an op on my experience there; I hope you will all find it useful! :-) ● Location North County Durham - travelling from Newcastle, it took us about half an hour to reach Beamish; ...
...rural location. A trip to Beamish takes up most of the day, but if you are coming from the north, you may want to include a stop at the Angel of the North in Gateshead (as we did), which is well worth a look close up, as it has come to be a representation of the North East and is really quite stunning. Beamish is open 10am to 5pm (4pm in winter), and it is recommended that you allow around 5 hours to get around everything adequately. ● Entrance ...

the pride of the North East

Advantages: lots of things to see and do in a friendly, informative enviroment
Disadvantages: none

Beamish is certainly the place where the past comes to life. This open air museum recreates life in the North of England in the early 1800s and 1900s in an entertaining way for visitors of all ages. Museum staff are dressed in period costumes and all act out the parts they are playing and are very friendly and entertaining and this certainly appeals to the younger members of the family, as they are encouraged to ask questions and take part as much ...
...01/08/2001 - we went to Beamish again last weekend and it now looks as if the farm is going to be closed now for the foreseeable future, until the foot and mouth epidemic is over. THE RAILWAY STATION Here you will find the signal box, goods shed and the station building. There is even a waiting room that is for ladies only. THE RAILWAY Take a ride on the 1825 railway, which I have to say is a very unique experience. You travel in 1825 railway ...

BEAMISH OPEN AIR MUSEUM

Advantages: Lots To Do And See
Disadvantages: Big and very spaced out.

Beamish is an open-air museum and situated near County Durham in The North of England, it is dedicated to the life and times of the 1800’s. Here you will find everything you need for a brilliant family day out, in fact you need a long day to actually give credit to Beamish. Prices are quite high but a family ticket can save you money its around £24 for 2 children and Two adults. Once you have paid though there is no real need to spend a lot more, I do however recommend you buy a guide book at £2 or else you will be struggling! Once through the gates you will see the Tram platforms, now these are there for a reason, the whole of Beamish is so vast that, although you could walk it, the trams make it a lot more enjoyable to get from place to place. These come along at intervals of every 15-20 minutes so you never need to ...

Visit Beamish Open Air Museum

Advantages: great family day out, living history
Disadvantages: it should not be raining when you go there

Last year, we visited Beamish for the first time. It is an open air museum, located in the North of England, between Durham and Newcastle. (Note: I had to put this review into the Durham category, because Ciao do not like to add many new categories at the moment. They ask us instead to post it to the closest city/area category that is available) This museum has won a number of awards including Visitor Attraction of the Year 1997, British Museum of the Year 1986 and European Museum of the Year 1987. Beamish tries to show how people in the north-east of England used to live and to work in 1825 and in 1913. Some buildings were located here before and just have been restroed, and others have been taken from somewhere else and transported and rebuilt here. The whole area is quite large and can be devided into four separate places ...

Review of Durham (England)

A unique open air museum at Beamish

Advantages: interesting , informative
Disadvantages: tiring , hard to get to without a car

Durham itself is a nice cathedral city .There are plenty of riverside walks , a wonderful catherdral and plenty of history waiting to be discovered . Durham also has it's share of students with it's highly acclaimed university and botanical gardens . There is also a respectable shopping centre too with such stores as JJB sports , Currys and M&S It is a fine place to visit and spend the day , but this op will concentrate as others have done on the Beamish open air museum in County Durham near Stanley. My partner and I went to Beamish museum on 13 August 1999.Beamish is set in a lovely picturesque valley , with open countryside all around. We had a two for one voucher enabling us to gain admission for a total of £10 . Normally admission is £10 per adult in the summer. This is not cheap, but we spent five hours looking round ...
