The UK's '4th coolest boutique hotel'

Advantages: Cental location, friendly service, individualistic
Disadvantages: A little cramped, grubby carpets, a little inflexible on breakfast times

I travel a lot with work and it's a trifle sad but I have become blasé regarding the same luxury hotel chains-Renaissance, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc It was nice to stay at a boutique hotel for once-and one right slap bang in the middle of Newcastle city centre. Prestige Events Magazine voted it the 4th coolest boutique hotel in the UK last year. The Lowry in Manchester (I love it) was number 10. It's a cute little hotel with a mere 49 bedrooms. I'm not sure why we stay here rather than one of the hotel chains but I am not complaining! Apparently it used to be a bank. It's also Newcastle's first pet friendly hotel. I travelled with my dear deceased little dog in the past and we both enjoyed dog friendly hotels. First impressions: You could almost miss the hotel, as it's very discreet. And small! As soon as you walk through the door ...

A Village Gem

Advantages: A personal touch goes a long way
Disadvantages: May be too out of the way for some

, and all of these include a full English breakfast. All children under 2 years stay free of charge when using existing bedding or in a cot. Pets are not permitted. It is not really somewhere you will happen upon, and it is not in a central point for all of the shops and nightlife in the North East, but if you want somewhere secluded and not in an obvious position then this hotel is for you. Review of Ryton Park Country House Hotel, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

A perfect, quiet weekend away

Advantages: Excellent location, service and facilities
Disadvantages: Quite expensive; hardly a thrill-seeker's paradise

. The next morning we ordered toast and coffee from room service so I couldn't comment on the breakfast - however, I can't imagine the standard of the food dropping horrifically overnight, so I dare say there'd have been no problems. Before we left we also paid a visit to the Gosforth Park Leisure Club which is free for all guests to use; this is very well equipped with gym, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool, squash courts, outdoor tennis courts, sunbeds and snack bar. The Gosforth Park also boasts extensive conference & banqueting facilities, and is locally well-known for it's Christmas parties and lunches. Other facilities on-site include a hair salon and a hotel shop selling papers, cigarettes and confectionery. In summary then, a perfect hotel for a quiet weekend away, with the added bonus of having Newcastle city ...
