This bed and breakfast is situated close to the bus station and just five minutes walk from the very centre of town. We arrived in Turku by train and walked the route in ten minutes so the location is good yet still quiet.
Look hard, it's not easy to spot. The doorway looks like all the doorways on the block which is full of shops and offices. There is an entry buzzer to let you in; once you check in you'll have a key for this door. The B and B is up a couple of flights and there's no lift. It's not too bad but people with mobility problems should be aware of this.
We hadn't booked in advance but there was a room available. We were checked in without fuss and while the owner wasn't effusive she was friendly enough. The bedrooms are off the main corridor as are the shared shower rooms. This does mean a certain amount of noise as ...
Advantages: You are given your own front door's keys so you can come and go as you please. Disadvantages: You will need to share the bathroom with the other room.
I stayed at this bed & breakfast in May 2009 and found it easygoing, friendly and comfortable. It is a very informal & quiet place; the best way to describe it is by saying that the rooms look like you are staying at your best (girl)friend's house for the week end (basically, it has a very homely feeling). The owner can arrange for all sorts of breakfasts (special diets, etc) and she will cook them in the kitchen in front of your eyes while you sit at the table. It is about 10 min walk from the city centre and from the train station. ...
Advantages: Addictive. Disadvantages: Not enough varieties on sale.
The British are responsible for introducing to the world many things - football, cricket, whisky, the Beatles, to name just a few and we are also the agents by which this marvellous, rich and delicious wine was introduced to the rest of Europe.
Marsala wine, not to be confused with indian maasala cooking, originates from a small corner of Western Sicily. As the story goes, an English sea captain was desperate to replenish his stocks of rum, needed to give his jolly jack tars their daily tot and put into the port of Marsala in Sicily, roundabout 1798. Unfortunately for him, no rum was to be found but astute locals convinced him that he should take on board casks of the local wine called Marsala.
Any wine that was to undergo the rigours of long sea voyages and high temperatures was "fortified" with the addition of a little brandy ...
