Beautiful beeches.

Advantages: native, easy to keep, beautiful colours.
Disadvantages: can get a bit big for urban gardens.

I grew up in the cotswolds, were there are some wonderful beech woodlands. These are particularly beautiful trees which I would highly recommend. Beeches wil eventually grow to significant heights and are therefore not suitbale for small urban gardens. However, you can prune them and keep them small, either as shrubs or as hedges. Beech trees make excellent thick hedges that provide shelter for birds and other wildlife. The beech has a reddy brown bark that looks very attractive. In larger trees, the colour of the trunks tends to be paler with only the new growth retianing this colouring. beeches produce medium sized simple leaves, oval in shape, either green or copper (A variety that looks especially good in the garden.). The wood burns well when dried. In the autumn, beech leavs turn to wonderful, bright colours (most usually ...

Maeve's Marvellous Beech Book

Advantages: Beautifully written, thought provoking & keeps your train of thought
Disadvantages: Like all Binchy books, it comes to an end.

I freely admit to loving Maeve Binchy books, I have been a huge fan of her books since I was a teenager and special occassions (holidays usually) call for me buying one of her books. The Cooper Beech was one book I had had difficulty in obtaining for a while and was please to find it in a second hand book stall in Bath, the book itself told a tale, the spine was well work and loved, a testiment to Binchy's writing. The book is set in Ireland as usual, in the late forties and early fifties & the focus being on the village of 'Shancarrig' and the lives and and affairs of it's residents, both young and old. The Copper Beech is a tree that stands at the heart of Shancarrig, in the school grounds. As much as the school is at the heart of the community, the tree is the focus for the children of the town, this is the tree where, when ...

Mount Vesuvius - There she didn't blow!!

Advantages: Utterly incredible views and atmosphere !!
Disadvantages: Not suitable for the less fit

Thinking back, my ten day holiday in the Bay of Naples probably packed in more wonderful venues than any other holiday I have taken. I visited Pompeii, Capri, Herculaneum ,Sorrento, drove around the wonderful Amelfi Coast and I actually climbed to the top of.arguably, the most famous volcano in the world - Mount Vesuvius ( Monte Vesuvio) !! All my life I had wanted to visit Pompeii but I never dreamt that one day I would climb to the crater from which the source of Pompeii's destruction came with such vengeance. Situated just six miles east of Naples it is a short distance from the shore. The area around Vesuvius was officially declared a national park on 5 June 1995. The thing that amazed me was just how volcano dominates the whole area -we could see it soon after leaving the airport on our way to our hotel and it ...
