The other side of Beirut

Advantages: The virgin diving to Westerners
Disadvantages: The way South!

...
Whenever anyone mentions Beirut visions of war, unrest, kidnapping and death are conjured. I had heard on the grapevine that Beirut was the place to go for diving that was “a bit different”. I was not too sure if my preconceived opinions would get me there! However, I decided to take the plunge. My friends looked at me in horror when I told them where I was bound. I was sure some of them were ready to scour the “papers waiting ...
...Lebanese coast and 4 in Beirut itself. Things have come along way from the war years when diving was a hazardous pastime when common problems included being stranded out at sea whilst shelling took place or finding yourself the target of snipers who would "shoot anything that moved"! Most dives are between 16 metres and 37 metres so expect two 30 metre dives per day. Technical divers have dives on offer up to 70 metres and is certainly ... more

Beautiful place,I wouldn't want to live there

Advantages: scenery, people
Disadvantages: war torn country

...My first impression of Beirut was a scary one. Coming from the United States, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When we landed at the Beirut International Airport, there was no walkway that led from the plane to the airport. We disembarked right onto the runway. A bus quickly picked us up and drove us to the terminal. My first impression of this place was scary because there were armed soldiers everywhere. This was not something I was used to. ...
...of the Middle East’’. Beirut is divided into two sections; East and West. The West side consists mainly of Muslims and the East side is mainly Christians. It is very apparent which side is which. The West side is more conventional and old fashioned, while the East side is very modern and even has casinos. During our stay there, I realized just how much we take for granted when we are home. Running water and electricity for example. In ...

The city that never Sleeps

Advantages: A very busy and fast paced city
Disadvantages: Too much pollution

I have lived in Beirut for almost three years now and I have enjoyed my time there. I love Beirut because of many different things. Firstly the night ife there is excellent and the restaurants are superb. There is a very high upper class region called Achrafieh and this is were most of the restaurants are situated. However you might have to go out of Beirut to get to any of the most popular night clubs because they are situated in Jounieh. The next ...
...langaues that they speak in Beirut and around Lebanon are French, Arabic and English. The currencies that are used in Beirut are US Dollars and the Lebanese Lira. For more information on Lebanon see my opinion. I do however have some complaints about Lebanon. these are that the amount of pollution in Lebanon is exceedingly gross. When I go skiing in the mountains I look over Lebanon anjd I se huge black clouds over Beirut. This is partly due to the ...

Friendly and comfortable

Advantages: Friendly staff and good amenities.
Disadvantages: Local Press

I visited Le Meridien Commodore in January 2007. Visiting Beirut was an amazing eye-opening experience, and my stay at this 5 star hotel helped to make me feel safe and comfortable. The staff are brilliant, friendly and always willing to help, the food was lovely and the drinks even better! It's the only place to stay if you are visiting Beirut. The hotel is situated in the heart of Beirut, in the 'famous' Hamra district. The address is as follows: Le Meredien Commodore, PO Box 11-3456, Riad El-Solh, Beirut 1107 2140, Lebanon Telephone no: (961) (1) 734 734 It is situated within a stone's throw of the beautiful mediterranean sea, some lovely restaurants and bars and brilliant shops, at very reasonable prices. The taxi drivers can be slightly over enthusiastic about your custom, however if you are lucky like me you will find ...

Room with a view

Advantages: Clean, friendly staff, relatively cheap.
Disadvantages: No frills in rooms

The Quality Inn I don't want to repeat what Vodkaboy wrote in his thorough review of the hotel in 2005, so I will just add my own particular observations from my recent stay at this hotel in October 2006. Tripoli is geographically in the North of Lebanon and roughly one and a half hours drive from the capital Beirut. It was thankfully spared from the recent carnage and is totally safe to visit. On my recent trip there, the city was bustling with people going out shopping or going for walks which struck me as amazing given what the rest of the country has gone through. Economically, Lebanon has always been very much reliant on tourism, particuarly tourists from the Gulf and the ex-patriot Lebanese community, so their attention to service and quality is second to none. My hope is that those who have not explored this beautiful ...
