Holiday fever seems to have hit me hard over the past few days and weeks - my Ciao opinions seem to reflect this, so airports are never far from my mind! I pass Belfast City Airport daily on my way to work, and although l have never taken a flight out of the new terminal building l have had lunch there and picked up and dropped off now approximately 8 times. The blooming terminal building only opened on Sunday 3rd June 2001!! My partner does a lot of travelling with his work so l have the pleasure of playing taxi driver.
So Belfast City Airport has been dragged up into the new century - albeit kicking and screaming but yes it has happened. The city airport is situated approximately 5 miles from Belfast City Centre, 80 miles from Londonderry and 20 miles from the International Airport (note these are approximations only!).
The old terminal building was rather old and past it but now the big new silver building really is the bees knees! The carparking facilities are 100% improved - the short stay carpark is much bigger and we can say HELLO to the new long stay carpark - a feature that did not previously exist. As with all airports car parking is quite expensive approximately £6 per day in the short stay and your talking around £25 for a fortnight in the long stay (if not more). One benefit is that if you are in the short stay for less that 10 minutes parking is free.
Directly outside the terminal entrance you will find the pick up and drop off points and really that is exactly what they are - l found this out on Friday l tried to pull a sneaky move and park there (l was in the car) but airport security moved me on - l then had to circle for 20 minutes - David's bags are always the last to come through the baggage reclaim!!
Inside the terminal building are what you expect (unless you had been in the old Belfast City Terminal Building!) a coffee shop on the ground floor and upstairs a restaurant which over looks the runway. I have eaten here and the food is over priced for what you get, but it is nice to sit and what the planes land and take off.
Belfast City Airport in the main caters mostly for Domestic flights - Glasgow, London, Newcastle, Teeside, Manchester etc. The flight providers including BA, British European and Gill Air. British European recently launched a new service from Belfast City to London City to coincide with the opening of the terminal building.
Travel to the airport by car is simple it is motorway and dual carriage way all the way, there is a new railway stop being built at present although it will be at least 6 months before it is ready, taxis are readily available but l do not think there is a regular bus service (l may be wrong).
The new terminal is a great improvement to Belfast's infrastructure and what would be great now would be if more flight service providers would consider flying from the airport to give us Northern Irish traveller more choice.
Advantages: In Belfast, very much expanded, convenient Disadvantages: Limited retail facilities
...new review to those on Belfast City airport, because, wow!, this place has improved.
Basically, a few years ago Belfast City airport really was not much to write home about. Now, it has majorly expanded. It still caters mainly to the domestic flights, but that is a major market for people from Northern Ireland, as we have to fly to get to most places! Easyjet is at Belfast International (Aldergrove), but there are some low cost flights into Belfast ... ...conveniently located in Belfast (its major selling point), and is easily reached by car. It is also (in my opinion) better served by public transport than Belfast International, if only because a taxi ride to any of the connections is not going to be too expensive.
The airport itself has substantial car parking and car rental facilities. It also has the usual pick-up and drop-off points. Inside, there is a decent size check in space and I have never ...

Advantages: Clean and really Efficient Disadvantages: none so far
Well Belfast is lucky to have 2 Airports that compete with each other , Aldergrove which is 30 Mins drive from the City Centre or The much improved City Airport which is less than 10 Mins by car. Both are served by buses from the centre and there will soon be a rail station by the city airport although passengers are bussed from the nearby Sydenham Station. Aldergrove is a large shopping complex and eaterie with International and low cost airlines ... ...Wolf and the Big Cranes Belfast is so famous for. BMI British Midland are moving their operation to the City Airport soon so will have the widest selection of routes within the UK of the 2 airports. Only downfall is that as it is close to the City the last flight scheduled in has to arrive before 9.30pm but that is no great hardship. Hope to see you all coming through soon. ...

Advantages: Huge Improvement Disadvantages: No cover to aircraft
Belfast City Airport has recently leapt into the 21st century with the opening of its new terminal building. The new glass and metal structure replaces the glorified shed which was dark, dank and smelly and hated by everyone who had to work there or pass through. The new building has plenty of light, pleasnt surroundings and good facilities for a provincial airport. Access is good with the Belfast bypass running right by the front door. There is ... ...Belfast International is that you actually arrive in Belfast rather than 17 miles away.
The only drawbacks so far are as follows:
The airport has been built with no walkways to get to and from the planes, with the amount of rain we get in Northern Ireland this is a pain.
Second the BA lounge has already had to close because the roof leaked.
Apart from these 2 niggles the overall impression is good and certainly a huge improvement upon the previous ...

Advantages: promximity to city centre Disadvantages: basic facilities
I have now visited this airport 3 times.
Yes, it is very basic.
On arriving flights luggage pickup is very prompt. Same as with most other airports, by the time you've walked from the aircraft the first luggage is just appearing.
However, this airport lets itself down badly by the lack of available taxis. I could be fogiven to thinking it was just my luck on previous visits, but yet again there were just not enough to meet demand.
Parking appears ... ...space.
For departures, tickets must be uplifted before proceeding to check-in, if not already received. However, visit the shops before proceeding to check-in as the shops in the departure lounge are "very" basic. Delays are rare, but if they occur you can leave the departure lounge to return to the main shops (a most welcome benefit) although you must return back through security.
Due to the limited size, the entire airport is on one level, and ...

Belfast International Airport (Belfast Aiport)
I flew out of belfastairport around four years ago, when I did fly out of the airport it was a bad time to fly out. The day before we where to depart to orlando the shoe bomber came on the scene! So the airport secuirty was put up. But the airline I was travelling with most of their planes had Technical difficuilties. So I was delayed for 30 hours and had to stay in the Hilton over night. So I should be able to tell you enough about it as I was in it for 24 hours.
Area...
The Belfastairport isn't in belfast, it is closer to Antrim a city near belfast. The airport is around 12 or 13 miles away from Belfast. So I don't know why they called it Belfast International Airport. But there is a hotel beside the airport. So if you have a early flight and you coudn't be bothered to get up ...
Advantages: Cheap, reliable Disadvantages: Not for the nervouis flyer
A nervous flyer might not enjoy a flight from Prestwick to BelfastCityairport with Gill Air. However the flights are cheap, and relatively painless. For a 40 minute flight you don't need pampering, and indeed you aren't. The flights are on time, you don't need to worry that they'll lose your baggage, and although this isn't the comfortable option it sure as hell beats a choppy crossing on the boat from Stranraer.
It is a basic service, and they make no bones about this fact, but it is reliable and above all very easy. If I needed to get from Scotland to Ireland and time was not an issue, I'd happy go with them again, just because the air terminal in Belfast is very convenient. ...
Advantages: Convenient to the Centre of town, helpful staff, easy to get to/from Disadvantages: Noisy traffic, no car parking, worst breakfast in the UK!
My company had their Christmas Party at Jury's in London a couple of years ago, so I thought it would be a good bet for my first visit to Belfast.
But it did not compare at all to the Jury's Hotel in London. It was convenient to get to from the BelfastCityAirport - taxi cost 7 pounds sterling, and the room rate was not bad for a business/work week stay at 65 pounds sterling per night (the rack rate on the wall is 71 and their website is 69, so it pays to get your travel agent to book them for you!) The lobby area was marble and nice looking, and the staff was helpful - complimentary newspapers, etc., but when I got to my room, it was a disappointment - the paint was chipped in the bathroom around the mirror, the furnishings could use an update, and the traffic was very noisy since I overlooked the main street. I had a great view ...
