Belize it or not!
Advantages: The Blue Hole, rich with history Disadvantages: beggars following you around town asking for money
I visited Belize in 2006 on a diving trip so this is a review of both Belize and the diving.
What Made me Choose Belize?
I am a keen diver and had just finished watching champion freediver, Tanya Streeter, in a programme about scuba diving and skin diving in Belize. I was so fascinated and taken by the place that I decided I must go and spent time researching my different options. I settled on a liveaboard experience (7 days at sea) and ... ...
I live in Berkshire so I flew from London Heathrow to Belize City. There are no direct flights from the UK so I had to fly via Miami and stay in Miami overnight. It was Virgin from LHR to Miami and American to Belize.
Coming back I did not have to do an overnight but spent a lot of time waiting at Miami International airport for my flight back to the UK. There are different options and you can pretty much fly back from any major US city that ...

Belizian Paradise
Advantages: idyllic setting, sun, sea and beer by sunset. Disadvantages: gets a bit windy.
...to the idyllic island/islands of Caye Caulker.
Arriving at sunset gives you the feeling that you don't want to go anywhere else...........ever!!
We stayed at the Rainbow Hotel, which provides rooms that all have a sea view. In fact you didn't even have to get out of bed to watch the sun rise!
Highly recommended is a snorkelling trip out to the reef, a conservation area that offers a huge range of marine life. Our snorkel guide, Carlos, took us ... ...fish. The highlight being Sharkray Alley, having plyed the local Nurse sharks and Stingrays with fish, we were then allowed to swim in amongst them, or rather for them to swim all over us, an amazing experience, almost on par with swimming with dolphins.
What better way to end the day than settling down with a nice cold bottle of Beliken (local beer), or a Pantyripper (rum and pineapple juice) and watching the sunset from the Lazy Lizard bar, situated ...

Safety warning in Belize City
Advantages: Local culture Disadvantages: Local crime
I visited Belize City on business.
I was warned Belize City can be dangerous, particularly at night. This may well be the case if you venture in some parts of the city in the shanytowns. I went out only once in then night, with one of the local colleagues of my company. We headed for Freetown Rd and managed to isit a couple of clubs without any trouble whatsoever, although I was impressed by the amount of people drunk. Apparently Belize City is ... ...Concerning food, I went in the area around King Street and had chinese, caribbean and mexican food.
All together, although Belize City did not prove to be as terrible as I thought, this is not the kind of place I would spend too mcuh time on my holidays. ...

Up the New River
Advantages: Adventure on the river Disadvantages: Sad feeling
Lamanai is in the North of Belize, an area which had been inhabited by the ancient Mayas and still retains a lot of its past.
It is possible to get there on a daily trip, or to spend the night there, although accomodation can eb a bit pricey. If you can afford it, though, I would recommend you spend the night there, since it is very athmospheric
Most tourists get there by river, and so did I. We managed to spot 1 crocodile on our trip.
Once we ... ...can visit the ruins at Lamanai only during the day. Our group was relatively small, only 6 of us, including a couple of German lesbians, I suppose, who felt particulalry out of place there.
Apart for the ancient ruins, what each tourist visit, including myself, is the Indian Church.
The strongest recallection I have of this trip, is the feeling that the ancient Maya culture must have been very mystic. I personally believe we cannot appreciate today ...

A little piece of paradise....
Advantages: Cheaper that the other beach resorts/ great beach Disadvantages: Not that easy to get to.
...caye attatched to the land. Placencia is a down to earth travellers beach resort, which has not yet become as over run by tourists to as great an extent as San Pedro and Caye Caulker, the better known cayes have. So ok it isn't particually easy to get to Placencia... 6 hours down the unpaved Southern Highway followed by an hours boat ride in a decidedly dodgy boat may not appeal, but it is well worth the hassle! Belize is not known for its beaches ... ...should easily be able to find a reasonable double room for 10 usd/ 2per/ night- not bad for a beach haven!
Don't go to Placencia if you're expecting 5* luxury- you won't find it. It is just a great place to relax, top up on the tan, and hang out... ...
