October 2006
My parents decided they'd like a family holiday and had been to the hotel several times and liked it there, so all eleven of us, my parents, my sisters family and us 3 filed off the plane to be greeted by our minibus driver to take us to the hotel and for october some fantastic sunshine.
He was friendly and definately not like most drivers in malta he actually drove at a very reasonable speed instead of like an F1 driver.
Our hotel is situated in qawra on the outskirts of bugibba, unfortunaley on a main busy road and not very close to many amenities within a few minutes walking distance. However if you don't mind a little stroll of about 15-20 minutes there is central bugibba and qawra to visit where your find everything you need.
There's many attractions on the island where you can book excursions through your travel rep or reception or at agents who will then pick you up from outside the door of the hotel. If you don't want to go on an organised trip then you can go into bugibba and jump on the local bus for about 60p and go anywhere on the island. This is a standard rate for the
buses.
Our hotel
On arrival at our hotel there was a set of stairs leading up to the reception desk and main part of the hotel. Our daughter of 3 months was in a pram and there is a lift for wheel chairs and prams but after trying to work out how it worked decided it was quicker to carry the pram up the stairs to the reception. We got our 3 room keys straight away, 3 twin rooms 1 with a cot and a family room and were booked in for a week all-inclusive. Our rooms were on the 5th floor, the lifts were clean and our rooms were all withing a couple of doors of each other which was good. The only thing that they had mixed up was which room the cot was mean't to be in, but that wasn't a problem and easily moved and sorted. We had just enough time to put our cases in our room freshen up and shoot downstairs for lunch. You are given a card with your room number on to show at the bar and restaurant to show your all inclusive altho after a couple of days our barman seemed to know our numbers off by heart and no we weren't a load of drunks they also served coffee which we very often went for after our meals etc.
The rooms
The rooms were clean and provided with plenty of towels in our bathrooms which had baths with overhead showers in, sinks, toilets and a hairdryer. There was plenty of storage room and spare bedding in the wardrobe.
There was also safes available in your rooms at a small cost, tea and coffee facilities to hire again at a reasonable cost and a cooler which the hotel advise you it's not a fridge but only somewhere to place already cold items temperature down. Personally i wouldn't of bothered but it was handy for keeping our bottled water in for the babies bottles at night, but it's just as easy to nip down to the bar and get some when you need it otherwise.
The restaurant
The staff straight away recognised my parents and they said hello to us the rest of the family and very kindly organised a large table for us to sit at which they left made up for us for the entire week. This wasn't just us there were other large families they had kindly done the same for. The meals were quite basic and I wouldn't go over the top at the variety but were edible. My main critiscm was that it's very hot in there and feels like a sauna at times and would of liked to see a salad bar on both lunchtimes and evenings whereas normally it was only in the evening. For me i prefer a lighter lunch and normally the lunch and evening meals were almost the same on the day, altho changed each day.
Facilities
The hotel has 2 bar areas, one mainly used during the daytime and the other also used in the evening. 2 pools one outside altho shaded by a large wall and an inside one on the lower floor which was great for us as a family to use as it was quiet and mean't we could take the baby in too. There was also a jacuzzi and sauna and a gym too on the lower floor and a very large room used for special occasions and functions. On the rooftop there is a great area for sunbathing and a spa to relax in. A games room close to the bar area so the kids can play within distance of you while having a coffee with a few games in, pool table etc.
Entertainment
The hotel does have evening entertainment but i maybe more for the hard of hearing on some evenings and on others ok, maybe this was because of the time of year but i'm not sure.
To be honest though most evenings we went for a walk after our evening meal down to bugibba or along the coastline anyway.
The pathways outside the hotel are very small but they do open up further along but it is a busy road.
The staff
We found on the whole the staff were helpful to accommodate us all. The restaurant staff were polite and helpful. The barstaff could do with smiling more often, but in particular there was an older barman who has been there for years, he appears to be very grumpy to begin with but as the week wears on he is actually quite funny and friendly as he gets to know you and has a fantastic memory for room numbers and drinks too. Reception staff were helpful and polite too. The cleaning ladies were hilairious as one of ours locked herself out on a balcony of one of the rooms, luckily for her we were just leaving our room and i heard someone banging. When we turned round down the corridor in one of the rooms she was waving her arms around shouting help through the glass, i couldn't stop laughing as i opened it for her and she said thankyou about 6 times i think she thought she was going to be out in the hot sun until the people returned.
On our final morning we were being taken back to the airport by minibus this time a different one and unfortunately it was very early in the morning. This driver wasn't so good as he started swaying across the road only for my dad to realise he was nodding off and gave him a quick elbow to wake him up. Luckily for us we made it in one piece but not without praying.
All in all though we had a good holiday and our experience of the bella vista hasn't put us off going back to it in the future although we like to try different hotels. But if you want a basic base, not too expensive and don't mind it being out of the main hustle and bustle but within walking distance then this hotel is ideal.
