When planning our trip to NYC for July 08, my girlfriend, her sister and I needed somewhere reasonably cheap, somewhere not too out of the main city and not some place where we wouldn't want to go back in the evenings. This was the place that really offered that.
The room was fantastic for what we paid. We had a 2 bedroom suite with ensuite bathroom. The suite is layed out so that there is a wall separating both rooms rather than a door, with the bathroom being in the 2nd room.
From the pictures on the hotel's website, the rooms looked average size but when we got into our suite, we were really suprised at how big the rooms actually were. The rooms containted 2 king-sized beds, full length mirrors, a tv with cable
in each room, a huge fridge (this was really handy for things like milk if you buy cereal from the grocery store and chocolate in the summer) and Ipod alarm clock docks in both rooms that were easy enough to figure out and set as required. The bathroom was clean, more than adequate in size with complimentary towels and toiletries. Both rooms contained air conditioning units which in July, is a really good thing! As well as cooling the room, the units were quiet enough to leave on whilst you sleep. Other reviews have said about views from the windows, this really depends on where your room is. The view from our rooms was amazing, you saw right out to the main street and really gave you the feeling you were in NYC just from your hotel room. The hotel offers free wireless internet to all guests. We took a laptop with us so this was really useful, especially for finding addresses of places. If you can, i'd really advise you to chose this over roaming facilities on your mobile. I unfortunately used my phone to find addresses a number of times and regretted it when I got my phone bill. There wasn't a restaurant for breakfast or dinner, but it wasn't an issue, there is a grocery store practically underneath it that gives you more to choose from that any complimentary breakfast a hotel could offer, and there are so many amazing places to dine in NYC, that you'd simply miss out if you had stayed at the hotel for dinner. So for us, this wasn't an issue at all. And if you wanted to stay relatively close, with somewhere reasonable to eat, there's always the Manhatten Diner opposite or Big Nicks just underneath the hotel next to the grocery store. The hotel does offer room-service from the Manhatten Diner for anyone wishing to eat in their room.
The staff are courteous, polite and willing to help in anyway possible. Even before we arrived, we had emailed the hotel as my girlfriend and I were arriving at a separate time to her sister, and the hotel were very understanding about this and were very helpful with the situation. The doorman are very polite and helpful, they are really useful if you need to hail a cab, although if they do hail you a cab, be polite yourself and tip them. They really do appreciate it. The cleaners always make sure your rooms are cleaned to the standard they were when you arrived (I have found this isn't the way in other hotels).
Other websites have complained about the lack of parking available if you wish to drive to the hotel. We didn't drive so this wasn't an issue for us, but the hotel is close enough for transportation links. The hotel is on 77st street and there's metro links on 72nd, 79th and 81st street and none are hardly a walk away and this was in July's heat! We used 79th street as this was near a Chase bank which is very useful for anyone needing to cash travellers cheques. As well as excellent transportation links, the hotel is very close to both Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, both are a must see for any tourist.
Not that NYC has a lack of souvenir shops, but if you need something last minute before you leave to go home, the hotel has one just by the entrance that has the usual gift ideas.
I really would recommend this hotel for anyone that wants a great hotel for a basic price, thats near to the city and that has good transportation links. We are hoping to go back to NYC next year and we would definately go back to the Belleclaire.
Hopefully this review has been helpful for anyone looking to stay at the Belleclaire or is just going to NYC.
