I am a Brazilian and have lived in Belo Horizonte for a few months, in which time i had a good opportunity to explore the city. It is a big city with lots to do. However it is not an overly touristy city so it is harder to appreciate it if you are unfamiliar with the language and customs. The shopping in the centre is good, with many cheap products to be found. The city itself is quite hilly and leafy so is interesting to look around.
I recommend visiting some of the parks on the outskirts of the city as these have beautiful views of the city and of nature. There is a park/square called Praça do Papa (Plaza of the Pope), on the outskirts of the city, this park/square offers fantastic views over Belo. Near this park/square there is Parque das Mangabeiras (Mangabeiras Park) which has some fantastic wildlife and beautiful walks. Just ask a local taxi where these attractions are as it is much easier to get a taxi out there than have to work out the various buses that you would need to catch.
It is very cheap to eat out in Belo Horizonte with a large selection of food types available. The Bus service is cheap, reliable and quick to use, though you will need a busroute map in order to be able to navigate with ease. This city will really give you a taste of Brazil so long as you have the confidence and a basic language level.
