Beautiful View - Belvoir Castle

Advantages: Beautiful Castle and Gardens
Disadvantages: Steep climb to get to the castle, before you start to enjoy the sights

~~ Belvoir Castle ~~

It was Saturday and the first full day of our holiday in Lincolnshire and after a very disappointing visit to Skegness we were in a quandary on what to do as it had already gone past lunch time. I was a little down hearted as it did not seem to be a good start to our holiday. In an attempt to cheer ourselves up we got the map book out as we had no tourist info with us in the car. We looked at the A52 which we were ...
...to visit; we spotted Belvoir Castle which was slightly off the A52, but what the hell it would cheer us up. So off we went.

We arrived there quite late in the afternoon around 3pm so we only had two hours to complete our visit before it closed. Entry ------- My first shock on researching it ...

...and around the vale of Belvoir most of my child hood, meant that I had the chance to visit some of the local attrations more than once, BelVoir Castle being one of them. As I still have relatives in the area, I decided to reminisce and take my own son their for a visit. Not remebering much from my childhood trips there, I thought it would also be of great interest to myself also ..................................how wrong was I. The first thing ...
...ten for value for money, Belvoir Castle would rate a 1 and that is being generous. Throughout my visit I found all but the castle attraction closed, the staff were not at all helpful (apart from in the restaurant) and to be honest it just appeared a shambles. There are no undercover facilities for people taking their own lunches, so if the weather turn bad, your only option is to hike back down to the car or be forced to eat at the restaurant. There ...

lavish hospitality. In 1558 his Daughter, Dorothy eloped with Sir John Manners. Sir George did not agree with this Marriage but when he died a few years later his entire Estate, which included Haddon Hall passed to his Daughter, Dorothy and her Husband. Since this day onwards the Manners Family have lived at Haddon Hall and the current owner Lord Edward Manners is a direct descendant of Sir John Manners. When the 9th Earl of Rutland, John Manners became the first Duke of Rutland in 1703 he chose not to make Haddon Hall his main place of residence, but instead he chose to live at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire. This began a period of neglect for Haddon Hall as the subsequent Dukes of Rutland also had little interest in Haddon Hall and it remained empty and unlived in until the 1920's when the 9th Duke and Duchess of Rutland restored ...
