Don't be a prawn - visit the fish-market
Advantages: Looks great, get tasty free samples, handy for ferry passengers Disadvantages: Very expensive, quality of some goods not good
...Bergen do not buy their fish and seafood here as it more expensive than at other outlets. That said, if the locals don't buy it, who does? You can't cook it in your hotel and you're not really supposed to take it home on the plane. Fortunately a few items can be bought in vacuum packs which I believe can be carried in the hold. The actual fish market is much smaller than in the past. Now the fish sellers share their market with other traders selling ... ...if you don't particularly like fish or seafood (what's wrong with you, you fussy article!) the fish-market is a striking sight and a great place for a photo opportunity. Stalls are laden with giant pink king crabs, mountains of prawns and bags of blue-black shelled mussels. Some stall holders offer free samples which you should make the most of because (as well as Norway being expensive in comparison to British prices) the seafood here is over-priced. ...

Bergen Aquarium - no wrapper on these penguins
Advantages: A fun and educational place to visit Disadvantages: Perhaps not for younger children, can get crowded
...hadn?t seen enough water!
Bergen Aquarium has a reputation of being one of the finest in Europe and while I haven?t been to many, I can see why Bergen?s has this good reputation. The aquarium is situated about 1.6 Kilometres from the fish market, which in tourist terms is the heart of the city. It stands at the end of the Nordnes peninsular and you can find it quite easily by walking as far as you can before you end up in the fjord. When you fall ... ...wooden house, the part of Bergen where we stayed, in fact.
The outside sections of the building are that kind of art deco style that lots of zoos tend to be built in; simple clean white buildings that are rather stylish. Although we visited on a Saturday afternoon and there were lots of people around we didn?t have to queue long for our tickets. When you get your tickets you are also given a guide to the aquarium and a list of the feedings times ...

Flam Railway Adventure
Advantages: The most stunning scenery this side of Europe Disadvantages: The train is usually always busy.
I went on the Flam railway as part of the Flam Railway Adventure with Thomson cruises, and it truly is an adventure not to be missed!
You board the train in Flam (if thats where you wish to start) and it journeys up the steep mountains. The train is nice and warm whilst you look out at the cold landscape surronding you. The views are simply stunning, everywhere you look there is a thunderous waterfall, or low hanging mist, don't forget to pack the ... ...into the mountains you stop at a waterfall, and literally walk off the train onto the ground. The waterfall (or Fossen, in Norwegian) is right next to the train, but with a nice fence to stop you tumbling to a nice watery grave. You can't fully appreciate the actual size of the waterfall until some enchanting music starts to boom around the area (which, by the way, is like a hollowed area with no roof surronded by cliff like walls), and a lady steps ...

Cad gets high in Bergen
Advantages: Allows you to see excellent views over the city Disadvantages: Can get slightly busy at peak summer times
...on this funicular railway to Mount Floyen, as this is the quickest and easiest way to get scenic views over Bergen. For those with no knowledge of Norway, Bergen is a city located on the West coast of Norway and was once its ancient capital. Getting to Bergen can be done by land, sea or air, however we used the first option as we were staying in a log cabin near a place called Eidfjord. One thing to note is if you do drive by car to Bergen they have ... ...transports visitors and locals to Mount Floyen some 320m above sea level. This trip takes around 7 minutes in either direction on the two cars, one red and one blue. The two cars have been recently upgraded in 2002 with room for 100 passengers each. Each car has two automatic brakes in addition to the normal brakes and an emergency brake. The cars are pulled up or down the line on a cable which links them and is controlled by a pulley at the summit ...

Pack 'em, stack 'em & ride 'em up the mountain
Advantages: Nice scenery from Fjord to mountain Disadvantages: Not great value and saturated with tourists
...branch of the larger Sognefjord, Flam is some 100 miles (160 km) west from Bergen and 220 miles (360 km) north-west of Oslo. Getting there can be done by rail, road or by boat as there is a port at the Flam end of the branch line. Flam railway or Flaamsbana to the locals is advertised as one of the most scenic in Europe. Whilst I'm not going to fully agree with this bold statement, I will agree that the railway does have a steep climb through a scenic ... ...at Flam around 10am after a two hour road trip from our hut near Eidfjord. I would guess that a road journey from Bergen would be about the same and from Oslo it would be in the 4-5 hour bracket. These are long road journeys so the alternatives are taking the Bergen to Oslo train and getting off at Myrdal which is the mountain side of the Flam branch line or taking a Fjord line boat from Bergen up the Sognefjord to Flam.
If you do go by road the ...
