The airport has one hexagonal terminal and has rapid check-in facilities which make it a very efficient and user friendly airport. It has a number of facilities including bureau de change, toilets, car hire, restaurants and hotels. We didn’t have time to check any of these out when we arrived because the service was so efficient; our bags arrived at the luggage carousel before we did. I was really impressed because, by the time we had boarded the little coach to travel the short distance from the plane to arrivals, our bags had been unloaded from the aircraft and delivered to the Terminal. I have never seen this happen so rapidly!
No porters are available for luggage handling, but baggage trolleys are free. I thought this was a welcome feature because I usually have to hunt frantically for a coin or struggle with bags and cases. This wasn’t as important for us because we were on short stay and only had one holdall, but I thought this would be good if we ever visited for longer. The main terminal also has a visitor information counter where you can get a free map of the city. The counter is open daily from 5.30am to 11.30pm. I thought this was another nice touch and one that I didn’t expect in an older airport with less up to date facilities!
On the way back we had time to have a drink and a snack in one of the restaurants in the Departure Lounge. This had a cinema theme and was pretty comfortable, although the food was a little on the expensive side. We had set off for the airport at 5am, so we were in need of refreshment! Details of all the facilities available and all current information and airport news can be found on a number of web-sites (including http://www.airwise.com/airports/europe/TXL/index.html).

The toilet facilities were basic but clean, so I didn’t have any complaints there. I always check out the toilets everywhere I go and my husband says that I could write a book because I always have an opinion about the state of them! It is quite an old airport, so don’t expect luxury, but it is basically well maintained and very convenient for getting into the city. There are a number of ways to get into Berlin from Tegel Airport.
These are:
TAXI
There is a good taxi service is provided just outside the terminal. The fare is about 25 DM to Bahnhof Zoo Station, the main station in the centre of Berlin. This takes between 20 and 25 minutes. We got a taxi because we didn’t know exactly where our hotel was and we were sharing the fare!
BUS
This is the most convenient and cheapest method of getting to and from the airport. The airport bus, number 109, leaves Tegel every 10 to 15 minutes from outside the airport. The bus route follows the Kurfurstendamm to the Bahnhof Zoo Station—and from there it's an easy taxi or U-bahn ride to most hotels. The bus costs about 4 DM and takes about 30 minutes to the Zoo station.
RENTAL CAR Avis, Europcar/Interrent, Hertz, Sixt-Budget, and other car rental agencies can be found at Tegel. All of these can be pre-booked before leaving the UK or you can wait until you arrive in Berlin. I was very glad that we didn’t have to do this and was very glad to let someone else do the driving!
There's also an airport hotel, the Novotel Berlin Airport, with a connecting shuttle between the hotel and the airport, although I would recommend booking in advance because we tried and found it had no vacancies. It meant that the night before we travelled back we were farther from the airport than we had been during our stay.
I thought it was a very basic but efficient airport and I would recommend it if you are visiting Berlin or if you are travelling on to other destinations in Germany or as a starting place when travelling around Europe. Just don’t expect a modern airport with moving walkways and wine bars! If you are travelling on a budget from the UK then Berlin Tegel is an ideal choice. For convenience and an easy to navigate airport it is suitable for the majority of your travel needs. It’s the best way to get to a wonderful city!
Advantages: Very close to the city Disadvantages: Very old, to small Terminal Building and Facilities
...is closest to the city. Berlin Tegel is both loved by travellers and hated by the residents close to it. No long travel from the Airport to your final destination. Berlins major Airport is only 10 min away from the City.
What to expect
---------------
Tegel being a very old Airport has a number of Problems. The worst of all is probably the Terminal building itself. Back 20 years with much smaller aircrafts around it must have been big enough and ... ...made.
So all in all Berlin Tegel is not exactly an of the nicest Airports but still quite convenient because it is so close.
Connection to the City ---------------------- The FASTEST AND EASYEST WAY to reach Tegel Airport is with the Bus 109. It takes you in about 25 min right in the heart of the City and it is a bit of a site seeing tour as well. As the Airport is very close to the city the TAXI is an option, which is no to expensive either and ...

...Berlin.
The most people for Berlin for this airport.
It is planned that Berlin will only have one airport and this will be the one in Schönefeld. Schönefeld isn't in Berlin and it is a big airport, too.
The most people I know are travelling from the airport in Tegel because it is in the near of my home. I live in the northeast of Berlin.
In Berlin everything isn't such as big as in London but London is a bigger city. When I was at the aiport in ... ...million people fly from the Berlin airport tegel to their finsh country.
At the airport there are 14 places for the plane.
I think it is a good airport for Berlin and I hope the airport will be better the next years.
Next year I will be going to UK and so I hope I can go to London from this airport.

Advantages: Very close to the city Disadvantages: Aged, outdated, too small, overcrowded, inefficient
I travelled to Berlin several times. I like that city. However, I could not come close to anywhere I could say I like any of the three airports they have there. The Tegel Airport is very very old, no modern facilities to help you out, even the airline signs are so small that the cab driver squinted to see which terminal I was supposed to get off. (They know of no other terminal than where Lufthanse takes off) So at the end, I had to dash around with ... ...check in. The airline offices and check-in counters were so close facing eachother that one had to squeeze through the queues to walk through. The shops are placed so strangely that you cannot understand which is the souvenir shop and which is the fast food restaurant. The hamburger joint is a joke. A single table shows that some people are devouring something but only when you look into the tunnel, you can understand there is a food process going ...

Quick review of Berlin - Tegel (TXL)
After years of using Schonefeld from Luton, we decided to try Tegel since it was on the end of the UK-Germany route when you fly from the new Heathrow Terminal 5.
We were very impressed by the staff at Tegel and how quickly we cleared entrance and got our bags. Taxis were available immediately and took us to our hotel in the city at reasonable cost.
When returning we suffered no delay, seeing the display boards as we approached the terminal so we knew to which counter we had to go.
We were through the system without any problems, had food, were called, entered the aeroplane and took off on time.
The food at Tegel is well prepared and with either tea or coffee, prepared us for the flight home. ...

Get off the plane and there are two dedicated passport control desks and a dedicated baggage carousel ... good eh?
Travelling back, the only place to sit to wait that I found ground side was a smokey cafe. The milling throng filled the single route back to the check-in desks ... at least there is a (one) kiosk for automated tickets. Passport control and security is right next to the check-in desk ... and straight into a dedicated holding pen. The ... ...The plane is late and I really wished I had my back-pain tablets with me.
Remember that dedicated passport control ... well the passengers were queued back onto the plane as control had taken exception to one of the first people off the plane, who was eventually taken off by police. While this happened the inbound 150+ paggengers could not get off the plane as there is room for only twenty or so people, so the cleaners could not get on with their ...
