Nobody would describe Berlin as a beautiful city, and neither is it awash with interesting and historical buildings, so why go there? Certainly not for the food, or even for the shopping. Its attractions are more subtle, more hidden, and for this reason all the more potent. However, you probably need to be a certain type of person to appreciate them, and certainly you need to have a feel for cities. Berlin was probably at its most fascinating when it was divided, but even now to wander around the streets which made up its Eastern Sector still produce a strange chill, if you are sensitive to such things. The city carries its history with it, not only from the divided era, but from many decades before. Everywhere there are builders at work, with cranes towering over the skyline, and maybe eventually it will become a city like all others. But until then, visit it, and see if you can detect its strangeness and the vestiges of its decadence, and its power. If you can’t, then perhaps Blackpool is for you.
