Berliner Dom

... I normally work at St Paul's Cathedral and got the chance to work in the Berlinerr Dom (Berlin Cathedral) for a week as an English tour guide. I was living right on top of my work place, as I was staying in a guest apartment in the cathedral's bell tower. I fell in love with Berlin and ... Read review

The domed Dom

Advantages: beautiful;, fascinating, reasonable, the coffins
Disadvantages: chrage for toilet and church, museum and website only in German

...the Brandenburg Gate to the Berliner Dom and beyond. It is easy to get to the Berlinerr Dom. A number of buses go past it and stop at ether the opera house or the Lustgartwens (the pleasure gardens). It is located conveniently in between Frreidrich Strasse and Hackeschermarkt S Bahn stations. You can also get the tram to Hackeschermarkt if you are coming from the former east Berlin.

Once you arrive at the steps of the Berliner Dom ...
...and buy a ticket. The Berliner Dom like Saint Paul's Cathedral in London does haver a compulsory charge for sight seeing. Like Saint Paul's they have found the donations are not enough to run the cathedral. It costs 5 euros (about £3.50) for adults, 3 euros for concessions and it is free for under 14s. It is a reasonable price to see a fascinating building and is better value for money than the £10 charge for St Paul's s Cathedral. You go through ... more

Splendor all around

Advantages: WOW it´s BIG and GOLDEN!!
Disadvantages: found nothing to be honest

Visiting Berlin - the Dome is a MUST even if you usually don´t go into churches. It´s amazingly big and has got seperate parts that together form a cross. The inside is completely of gold and marble and with lots of fabulous decorations. The most striking thing ist the "Kuppel", the dome-part on top. You can climb up on it and have both a look around the city and into the inside of the cathedral! Wear good shoes because the steps are very steep ...
...sarcophages of many German Kings, it´s a place of quietness, but not very sad. The sarcophages are rather pieces of art than giving you the impression of being in a cemetery. Best ist: try to get a concert in that dome. The acoustics is fabulous, so you´ll enjoy it thouroughly. Another tip: go up the Tower on the Alexanderplatz, then you´ve got a splendid view over the city and especially of the top of the DOME! AND...there´s a lift....so you ...

Berliner Dom

Advantages: Good value attraction
Disadvantages: Steps up to top of dome!

...summer of 1999, and the Berliner Dom proved to be one of the most striking attractions in the city. From the exterior, the cathedral is a large and impressive building, situated close to the central area of what was once Communist East Berlin. The interior was nothing short of breathtaking, almost indescribably grandiose and spectacular, with the giant dome rising a seemingly enormous distance above one's head. For those prepared for a trek, a climb ...

Turm with a view

Advantages: Great panoramas of the city
Disadvantages: Busy!

- it only takes 40 seconds or so anyway. But oh how I longed for the quiet and solitude of the viewing deck. If anything, it was more crowded and noisier than on the journey up. This is the real downside. Although the views are stunning and encompass the whole city (weather permitting), actually getting a clear view can be rather tricky. Now I'm not the type to shuffle around meekly and let all the other plebs use my space, but it was just a little chaotic and spoiled the experience a little. Still, it's not as if you ever get these sort of places to yourself, is it? As I said, the views are stunning. Whether you look to the east and the totalitarian image of rank upon rank of massive concrete blocks of flats standing as if soldiers on parade; or look down below to the Baroque magnificence of Berliner Dom; or west along the grand ...

Brilliant Berlin

Advantages: A wonderful city
Disadvantages: None

1989 when the West German Chancellor walked through to be greeted by the East German Prime Minister. After walking through the gate (towards East) we found a French café which had lots of Peugeot items in downstairs. Working for a Peugeot dealership in England we were interested so we decided to take a look. There were lots of items (e.g. Salt and Pepper Mills and Saws) that I didn't know Peugeot made so I found this an interesting place to visit! There was a full size 601 (one of the first Peugeot's made) and also the 907 Concept Car. There was a shop where you could purchase Peugeot items such as small Salt and Pepper Mills and miniature cars. We then went upstairs into the café and we had drinks and I had a delicious sandwich! ~ Day 3 ~ We went to the Berlin Dome (Berliner Dom) on day three. The Berliner Dom or Berlin ...

The Heart of Berlin - Splendid Place

Advantages: central, lovely location
Disadvantages: expensive place

The "Gendarmenmarkt" is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. No wonder - as you saw, I wrote about the Berlin Dom already. This "Gendarmenmarkt" is the square where you find this Dome plus another Dome, called the French Dome. There´s a lovely theatre in the middle, originally built by Mr. Schinkel, a famous theatre producer of the last century. The best time to visit this square is in the evening, because it has got a very exclusive atmosphere at sunset and early night. Every building is covered in beautiful lights and the atmosphere is really exciting. Lots of cafes, also for sitting outdoors, give you the atmosphere of being on holiday even if you have to work. A great festival is once a year, the "Classic- Open- Air" usually in July. And if you want to have a very exlusive place to stay: have a night in ...
