If you’re looking for five-star splendour at four-star prices, a stay at the Berners Hotel [renovated in 2000] - located just off Oxford Street in London's pulsating West-End - could be just the ticket.

Housed within a classical, period building dating back to 1835, it was converted into a hotel in 1904. The hotel's lobby, with its plush surroundings, ornate Grade II listed ceiling and relaxed ambience offers a sanctuary from the hectic pace of London life.

This is definitely a place to stay in if you’ve got a special occasion lined up for a loved one: you’ll be in their good books for a long time to come…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On arrival the reception staff were very courteous and efficient. I was given my room key within minutes of check-in.
The Hotel’s Service Facilities include: Air Conditioning in Public Areas, Business Centre, Concierge, Lifts, Fitness Room, Laundry Cleaning Service, Lobby bar, Lounge Area Multilingual staff, Restaurant and 24 hour Room Service.
The 216 guest rooms (spread over 6 floors) provide all the facilities needed for a restful stay including, satellite TV, direct dial telephone with fax and modem outlet, hairdryer (a necessity for Tiger!), trouser press, writing desk and tea/coffee facilities. Executive rooms have a mini-bar too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The room I stayed in was quiet (thanks to good double-glazing, considering the hotel's location) and very comfortable. Décor was traditional English with heavy mahogany furniture.

There was a notable Room Service list - you could order: food, drinks, shoeshines, laundry services, newspapers, wake-up calls and more on a 24hr operator service basis.

The en-suite tiled bathroom was tastefully decorated in champagne-coloured marble with ample space for personal toiletry storage. There were plenty of towels and 2 bathrobes on the heated railings. The power shower was superb set inside a deep bathtub.

Luxurious toiletries were provided for your convenience: shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, emery board, body lotion, shower caps, mini-sewing kits etc. Gents have the added benefit of an electrical razor socket (!)

The double bed was most inviting after a hard day’s shopping (!) with sumptuous pillows and a generous duvet flung over crisp white linen sheets… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

[After a good night’s rest, I got bathed, dressed and padded downstairs to find something to gnaw on…]

The Berners Hotel boasts a prize winning restaurant on the ground floor.

“Reflections Restaurant”, with its very English essence has a twist of the Mediterranean in a setting of luxury and calm [Tiger’s kind of joint]…

On arrival at the restaurant, you are asked for your name and room number and then shown to your table by the Head Waiter where your order for tea or coffee and preferred bread for toast is taken. There is already a selection of preserves/marmalade, butter and a milk jug in place, but the rest is self-service.

Once you know the tea/coffee pot is on its way, the choice of a magnificent buffet is yours for the taking:

A selection of very fresh, very delicious fruit (watermelon wedges, honeydew melon cubes, fresh strawberries, grapefruit segments and fruit salad – all served on separate chilled glass platters) was on display as well as pitchers of fresh orange, apple and grapefruit juices.

A choice of five cereals and a selection of cheese and cold meats were beautifully displayed - it was almost a shame to take any!

The aroma of fresh baked rolls, blueberry muffins and oven warm croissants permeated the air...

The hot buffet provided you with: the usual ‘Full English Breakfast’ items: bacon, sausages, black pudding slices, grilled tomatoes, scrambled eggs, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms and hash browns.

Fried eggs and omelettes are made to order as a chef with a griddle pan works his magic with a gas hob and a spatula at the far end of the buffet bar! Just wait in line and ask for the egg to be cooked just the way you like it…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If in the evening an overwhelming thirst takes over, the Reflections Bar serves all types of drinks and cocktails as well as light meals and snacks.
In the Lounge/ Lobby, morning coffee, light meals and traditional afternoon tea are available from around 10:00-17:00.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

For a touch of added luxury, choose the Club Floor with its air-conditioned comfort, exclusive Club lounge, private fitness centre and boardroom.

If you have a special occasion to celebrate, there are four excellent air-conditioned function rooms from which to choose.

**HOME ALONE:**

Single ladies policy: The Berners Hotel welcomes lady guests who travel alone, therefore a "Single lady policy" has been implemented to help make ladies feel more comfortable and secure during their stay.

For example, reception staff ensure that the guest's room number is not announced on check-in or allocate a room long distance from the lift.

**My Personal thoughts**

I was very impressed with this hotel and its amenities. Although on the more exclusive side of the price bracket, I felt it was money well spent and I wouldn't hesitate staying at the Berners Hotel again for a special treat.

The only thing that lets the hotel down is the street on which it's situated -let's just say it's not the cleanest road in the world: but, the hotel is literally a 3 minute walk from London's bustling Oxford Street and within easy travelling distance to many tourist attractions -

For example:

The British Museum,
The National Gallery/Portrait Gallery,
Dickens House Museum,
The Theatre Museum,
Transport Museum, and
plenty of shops and boutiques to explore

- all of which make up for the discrepancy in aesthetic surroundings
outside the hotel.

If you want to round off a perfect night out in London, then staying at the Berners Hotel will certainly make the occasion memorable.
