Berwick, North England, at the mouth of the Tweed River. The district includes the Holy Islands and the Farne Islands and extends SW to the Cheviot Hills. The town of Berwick, located in the district, is a market town and seaport, famous for its salmon fishing. Grain is the chief export; oil and timber are imported. Industries include shipbuilding, engineering, sawmilling, fertilizer production, and the manufacture of tweed and hosiery. The principal border town between Scotland and England, Berwick changed hands more than 13 times between 1147 and 1482, when Edward IV finally claimed it for England. It did not become officially English until 1885. Many still question wether Berwick is English or Scottish, it is English.
I have visted Berwick now 5 times most of them being 1-2 week durations and am returning at christmas time this year. The reason for my visits is that my boyfriend is from there and so we often go up and visit his family.
I really love visting the place, you are garanteed a warm and friendly atmosphere where ever you go. Its a very peaceful town and so relaxing. Its on the coast so you can easily take a walk along the beach and if you like history and walking you can take a walk along the walls and view the barricks - which is also a museum now. And as you walk along parts of the walls you can view the sea also.
However, the only thing to do other than walking is to go to the pubor go shopping. There are pubs everywhere! They are very nice pubs with a nice traditional look and nice food but sometimes you just want other stuff to do. There are also 2 nightclubs, opposite each other. Bedrocks and Cashmere, i have only been in bedrocks which was ok but nothing special and its mainly full of youngsters and when i say young i mean young. Younger than me and im only 21! The shopping is good, theres quite a few of your regular high street shops plus plenty of others. Theres Woolworths, boots, burtond, dorothy perkins and new look and some sports shops too.
You dont really need to worry about not having anything to do in Berwick though as its directly in between two big cities, Edinburgh and Newcastle. There both about 40 minutes away and the trains run quite often from the station.
If you did want to do something in Berwick you could go and watch the Berwick Rangers who are the only English team to play in the Scottish league. The pitch is in tweedmouth, berwick upon tweed. Its actually viewable from my boyfriends house. And on a Saturday night it turns into speedway, it can get quite busy though so get there early.
There are many places to stay in Berwick, plently of tradtional hotels, a travelodge and also a holiday camp. Although not much is provided at the holiday camp and only people staying there can be on the camp. It is right on the seaside though and close to the walls.
I enjoy visiting there its makes a very nice weekend away and i would definately recommend it. Dont be put of my the little to do as the sights are well worth visiting.

I seem to remember there being a very old bridge over the River Tweed in Berwick - it's an awful long time since I've been there mind you! Thanks for the reminder. Richard.

I like Berwick very much. I use to go there every week for my shopping when I was living in Kelso.
