SanJuan is broken into many smaller neighborhoods. The neighborhoods best suited for lodging are Condado, Isla Verde and Old SanJuan (Viejo SanJuan).
Customer service is not a Puerto Rican strong point so don’t expect anyone to necessarily go out of their way to help you. You will find the large chain hotels to have beautiful pools and wonderful restaurants. Most hotels include casinos and if you are not a fan of the large chain hotels, many small boutique hotels are springing up around the island.

...We chose to visit the Holiday Inn Alicante Playa de SanJuan for a week in July after having three very pleasant stays in Express by Holiday Inns in the UK. We were not sure what to expect in terms of quality, however it was probably one of the besthotels that we have ever stayed in.
The cost was €94 per night for an en suite room with king size bed and an “almost double” sofa bed. The room was on the third floor of the hotel and had a view of another apartment block to the rear of the hotel. However, this did not cause any problems as the apartments were quite a distance from the hotel, therefore not blocking the panoramic view.

The hotel building is over 7 floors: the ground floor, floors 1 to 5 and a floor called '-1'. If you are given a room on the '-1' floor, don't think that they are shoving you in the basement...

...I have spent quite a lot of time recently in San Jose, Costa Rica - what with spending time there on my gap year and going back to visit. This review will be about San Jose itself , but in my opinion, any tourist would be well advised to visit other places in Costa Rica (eg. coast, beaches, mountains). Many hotels in San Jose organise tours, so if you use San Jose as a base than that is fair enough! If you come to Costa Rica and only see San Jose, you will have really missed out!
San Jose itself is a smallish city. The best way of getting around if you are a tourist is to use one of the official cabs . These are red with yellow signs, or orange at the airport. They are incredibly cheap, and a reasonably safe option. Always sensible to agree a price with the driver beforehand just in case he tries to rip you off later, but I never had...
