I have stayed at this hotel twice in the last few years. Its quite a way outside the main Temple-Bar area but is right by the tram stops. As the trams run very regularily getting about is easy.
The hotel is very close to Houston rail station. If you fly into Dublin airport one of the many buses outside the airport will take you to the station and the hotel is about a 3 minute walk away.
The rooms are sparce and basic but suitable. The breakfast is very good and you certainly wont want for a large lunch. This is a big fry-up with all the trimmings.
The cost of the hotel is middle of the road but reasonable for what you get. Yes its reasonably basic inside but you get what you pay for.
It does get quite busy and checking in and out can take up a little time. There is the facility to leave luggage there if you arrive early and return later to check in.
Its best point is its location. Right by the tram stop and so very close to Houston Station.
Advantages: good prices, bar downstairs Disadvantages: too far from Temple Bar area
We stayed to the Ashling Hotel 2years ago and it is not such a great hotel for Dublin. It was a cheap price for a room there, but unfortunately there were a few issues we had, the first was having arrived on the Friday afternoon discovering the water wasn't on!! (not really their fault I suppose) the manager informed us that it would be back on in an hour or so, so we unpacked and walked for what seemed like 1.5 miles to Temple Bar (travel agent ... ...to eat, found the excellent 'Fitzers Cafe' (which was strangely a restaurant!!) and enjoyed a meal there. taxi'ed it back to the hotel, still no water and were assured a plumber was looking at the problem, true to his word the water came back on 1/2 hour later, after showering and getting ready for the nightlife in Temple Bar, went down to the hotel bar and could not for love get served as the place was packed with people that weren't even residents!. ...

And in the surrounding area, street lamps, cobblestones, small family owned shops, quaint pubs and horse fairs - all tell of a bygone age.
