Both myself and my fiance love the lake district and have stayed at many hotels with many different star ratings. Last year we got engaged whilst staying at this hotel which was fantastic but was also marred by small but continous problems.
On our first night at the hotel, we were tired and decided to order room service rather than go to the restaurant. We ordered soup and sandwiches. This took an age to come the room, and when it did the soup was cold and the bread, shockingly was moldy! When we called receptionn to ask for replacements they said 'oh so you want some new ones then'! We expected some sort of reparation for this like free drinks or for this to be deducted from the bill, we received nothing, not even a sorry.
The following morning we went into the restaurant to have breakfast, this was also cold. We found the staff to be very ignorant, and more concerned with each other than the needs and wants of their paying guests.
On a lighter note, the views were stunning, the rooms were very well sized and our evening meal in the restaurant was very tasty.
Following our fantastic engagement, we decided to order some wine and chocolates from the room service menu - this was a mistake! After a 10 minute conversation with room service asking for the chocolates specified on the menu, we finally got a tiny box of chocolates!
The car park to the hotel is down a hill which with a suitcase could be difficult to climb. To get into the hotel from the car park, you have to climb several flights of stairs - this hotel is not customer friendly and the staff have a very lazy attitude.

good review. In the current climate hotels like this one will probably not be around next year.

Aha - the plan here, y'see, is that you drives up to the door, leaves the baggage and other-'alf off, then drives around the back to the car park and walks up the steps, back to the hotel, both arms the same length... but given the attitude of the staff to customers, as you report, I'm not surprised nobody told you that's how it should work! Best wishes on the engagement, btw.
