Nestled in the side of a hill surrounded by other private houses, yet still with tranquillity, is the Hotel De Havelet run by Best Western, which inlcudes their very inviting and locally well-known restaurant- 'The Wellington Boot.'
Although we were working on a budget for this visit, we were still looking for good food and comfortable lodgings for a few days, and this hotel churned out the goods!
The hotel is situated on the edge of St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey, so the major town is very accessible by foot, and not too far from local public transport, taxis or boat trips to the other smaller surrounding Channel Islands.
We had taken up a short break offer, which we were very grateful for as our trip was not to be a relaxing one due to a death in the family. However, this hotel, whatever reason brings you to the island, will give you snatches of peaceful, tranquil moments even in the worst scenarios.
We had a standard room, but fortunate enough to have snapped up a harbour view which was stunning. On a clear day Jethou, Herm and Sark are visible as is Castle Cornet which boldly hails the sea traveller in, as ferries and private boat owners enter the harbour.
The bed was awesome. It was so big I thought I'd lost my husband one night! My side was Guernsey and I think the gap in between us stretched to Timbuctoo! It was extremely comfortable and the room was always of a very even comfortable temperature.
The en suite was fresh, tiled from floor to ceiling and very clean. This makes all the difference to any visitor's stay.
The evenings could be spent in the quietness of the room, or there was a very lush lounge area downstairs with a glowing fire to relax in. We envied folk who had that opportunity, as we were far too tired at the end of our day to take up this simple but relaxing alternative.
Breakfast was in the Wellington Boot restaurant which is linked via what we called the 'tunnel,' from the main Hotel. The service was efficient and the food more than adequate with a choice of cooked or continental breakfast.
No-one should ever indulge in a stay at Hotel De Havelet without at least once booking an evening meal at 'The Wellington Boot. ' (Fondly locally known as 'The Welly Boot.') The food was superb, with lots of flavour and good wine to accompany the experience. Meals in any part of the Island are not cheap, and neither is this, but well worth booking a meal, regardless. The good thing about eating on the premises means you don't have to say no to a glass or two of bubbly!
The staff were very helpful, courteous and friendly, and an asset to the hotel. Nothing was too much for them and they always delivered a smile and a 'Good day'.
If travelling by air, the hotel is about 15 minutes away from the airport; far enough not to have a constant barrage of aircraft engines flying over every few minutes!
Travelling by sea, means you are only about 5 minutes away after docking.
We would have enjoyed our stay more had we been there for a holiday, but it is certainly a hotel to recommend.
There are leisure facilities available if you are wanting to swim etc. In conclusion, and in my opinion it's a great place to stay.
