Best Western Hotels are among the world’s largest hotel brands but is actually somewhat unusual. This international hotel chain is made-up of individually owned and operated hotels and inns around the globe. However, reputedly it is not easy to qualify for membership of Best Western – prospective members must meet some very exacting standards and each hotel in UK is independently inspected on an annual basis by the AA.
Globally there are around 4,000 hotels in the group whilst there are several hundred in the UK. Some are bustling city centres hotels, others are nicely converted Elizabethan lodges and some are plush Georgian style country manor houses.
Among Best Western hotels in London are the Delmere Hotel, Hyde Park, the John Howard Hotel, Kensington, the Mornington Hotel, Lancester Gate, Raglan Hall, Highgate and Bryanston Court, Marble Arch.
There are a number of hotels in Scotland in locations such as Dumfries, Edinburgh, Fort William, Glasgow, Kinross, Pilochry and the hallowed home of golf at St. Andrews.
Best Western hotels in Wales are to be found at places such as Bangor, Lampeter, Llandudno, Llangollen, Newport and Swansea.
Many of the best known establishments of this chain are located in Southern England and I have stayed at several of them.
I thoroughly enjoyed a 3 day/ 2 night holiday in Exeter, the country town of Devon, and got a good accommodation, breakfast and dinner package for just over Stg50 pounds per person, per day, at the elegantly furnished Buckerell Lodge, a small country-style hotel, about a mile or so from the city centre. Meals in the Raffles Restaurant – an award winning eatery – were most enjoyable and I found my guestroom to be spacious, well furnished and exceedingly comfortable.
Another short sojourn was spent close to the feet of the South Downs at Bramber in Sussex. I stayed in the Old Tollgate Hotel at Bramber and again this establishment offered a 2-day package with accommodation, breakfast and dinner for some Stg52 pounds, per person, per day. This refurbished hotel offers very comfortable accommodation, a most congenial bar, conference facilities and an excellent Carvery restaurant. The latter is very popular and apart from hotel guests draws in patrons from Worthing, Brighton and other localities.
Best Western hotels, because of their stringent membership requirements can be relied upon to offer high quality accommodation and dining facilities but in independently owned hotels. The majority of them offer a very high quality of service and in the UK, Best Western hotels can be booked through their online website as well as through travel agents.
Although I cannot claim extensive experience of Best Western hotels I have stayed in several in both UK and Malaysia and have been impressed with the service and facilities at these establishments. What is a most pleasing aspect is that being independently owned and operated, they are not all alike and there is a distinctive mark of individuality about them, which is not the case with some international hotel chains. Best Western get the thumbs-up from me.
