Marvellous Melbourne

Advantages: The Most Liveable City in the World
Disadvantages: A long way away from practically everywhere else!

of immigrants, many of them relatively recent, and it shows. Melbourne's China Town, situated principally along Little Bourke Street, is the longest established Chinese settlement in the Western world, rivalling even those in San Francisco or London's Soho. Lonsdale St, nearby, is the cultural home of Melbourne's large Greek community, whereas Lygon St, a couple of blocks away in Carlton, and close to the University of Melbourne, is almost exclusively Italian. BAYSIDE; Melbourne extends around Port Phillip Bay, with a number of beautiful, leafy bay-side suburbs, and some fantastic, sandy beaches, some of which are less than 10 minutes from the city centre. Arguably the most charming of Melbourne's bayside suburbs is St.Kilda, about a 10 minute tram ride from the city centre. St.Kilda was Melbourne's most fashionable suburb in the 1920's and has ...

Great Central Hostel to see Melbourne

Advantages: Friendly Hostel, clean and cheap
Disadvantages: Can get noisy

The Melbourne International Backpackers The Melbourne International Backpackers is in a great location for the CBD. Located on Elizabeth and Franklin Street, the nearest station is Melbourne Central just 5 mins away and Flinders Street station is only (15 mins away). Rooms: Hostel dorm rooms are available from 4 ? 10 bed, these are all priced the same, the winter prices are $24 a night or $143 for a week. You will need to give a refundable $20 deposit for your key card. All rooms are bunk bed style with free linen and blankets, all rooms have a full length mirror and lockers. Social Areas: This hostel has a large kitchen which was part of the appeal for me, clean and tidy with enough pots and pans for everyone. You can get a cutlery box from reception; you just have to make a $20 deposit which you will receive back ...

Melbourne's Crown and Glory

Advantages: Lots to do
Disadvantages: Hard to see it all

I?ve complained before to all the good people on Ciao about not being much of a fan of Melbourne. It?s just one of those cities that doesn?t grab me. There is a local tension between Sydney people and Melbourne people, each side saying their city is the best and it?s true that Melbourne was once voted the most liveable city in the world. Although it?s got many things going for it, it?s just not for me. It was with some reluctance then that I spent a few days there last week for work. On Thursday night I had a colleague with me so when we?d finished the daily drudge of meetings we thought we?d have a night on the town. Crown Casino is the jewel in Melbourne?s crown (excuse the pun) of night life. Standing resplendent on the south bank of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, the casino, built in 1996 is a must see. The 39 ...
