We arrived at the Swan mid afternoon to find the road closed and the hotel surrounded by Police - we wondered what we had let ourselves in for!!!! However, our minds were soon put at rest when Reception told us they were not Police but actors - they were filming a film "Hot Fuzz" (see website) around the city during the week and they had 22 rooms reserved at the hotel.
We had booked using KitKash points and got a really good deal (£77.50 per room per night including breakfast) in what turned out to be a good quality 3* hotel. Our room was not the best in the hotel, but it was perfectly adequate, clean, decent size, recently decorated and pleasantly furnished including flat screen TV. comfortable beds and good quality freebies too!
Breakfast was good as well - plenty of choice from the buffet and hot dishes served to the table. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, in short all the standards you would expect from a chain together with the personal service from an independantly owned hotel.
We ate in the Restaurant on two nights and the meals were excellent - not cheap, but the standard you would expect from a 1 Rosette restaurant, plenty of choice and a menu which changed each night. The wine was OK too.
The hotel has a really good outlook over the Cathedral green, together with a comfortable lounge and cosy bar -both of which appeared to be permanently occupied by actors whilst we were there.
We saw more celebs in 3 days than we have seen in years - Simon Pegg, Timothy Dalton, Bill Baker, Paul Freeman, Duncan Goodhew to name but a few, and if you are in Wells during the next few weeks they are filming the new Kate Blanchett movie "the Golden Age" and they're staying at the Swan too.
Just a couple of grumbles, the car parking is not brilliant but then parking a car in Wells is difficult at the best of times and there a some ground floor rooms in a courtyard away from the main hotel which we didn't think were too clever.
All in all though it is a place to recommend and well worth a visit.
