We were only going away for a couple of days but for some reason, known only to him, my husband decided that he had very particular requirements as to where we were going to stay and what he expected from the hotel.
I managed to book a discounted room at the Grand Hotel in Torquay which seemed to match my husband's requirements for an easy walk to the beach and "a proper breakfast".
We arrived at the hotel and although the car parking spaces were rather tight and the places limited, the receptionist and other staff were especially polite and helpful.
The hotel, true to its name, was very grand, an imposing site set on the sea front in Torbay, but quite a way from the main town of Torquay, about 10 mins or thereabouts (but we are both quite fit and quick walkers). We actually found the location ideal as it meant the hotel was quite quiet at night.
Our room was a good size and had a view of the sea from a side window. I found the decor in our room a bit dated but it was clean and had a comfortable bed. There is some super Art work in the corridors, including information about Agatha Cristite. I believe it was here that she spent her honeymoon.
We had breakfast there on 2 days and the quality varied. One breakfast was excellent, day two the bacon was cheap and the experience rushed, with staff too busy to assist with requests for extra hot water.
The guy who comes round at night to turn down the sheets and bring coffee refills was a star and quite willingly fetched me fresh milk instead of long life .
Overall, a positive visit for £70 per room per night.
