The first thing that amazed me about Bethlehem was its size. I was expecting something like a small village, but it is a big town, complete with international hotel chains. Cultural events were taking place every evening in the city. We heard an Arabic singer (don’t know who he was). It’s not difficult to get there. You can take a bus for only 2 shekels from the Suliman street bus station. But once you’re there it can be a bit expensive. I wanted to go to the neighbouring village of Beit Sahour and it cost 15 shekels (nearly 3 quid) each time. If you take a taxi, be sure to agree on the price in advance. Plenty of places to eat, whether proper restaurants, fast food, or ice cream.)
Advantages: Very hip, very happening, very diverse. Amazing beach. Disadvantages: Concrete!
...Mediterranean setting, and high quality, if overpriced, art and craft shops.

Clubbers should grab a taxi to the industrial estate in the South of town, where the biggest & best club is ‘Haoman Shvaresrey’. It has several rooms with chart music, house & garage, salsa, rock and R&B.
The theatre holds nightly classical concerts, but the cultural centre is really Tel Aviv, whose opera and ballet are well worth a look.
