Sofia so good!

Advantages: Not too busy, good value for money, green
Disadvantages: Not many "attractions", not much for children

slightly east. This park contains my favourite Soviet era monument in Sofia - it's one of those tableau affairs depicting a scene of upright and patriotic citizens contributing to the war effort. A word of warning - if you do go to admire it, look out for the skateboarding teenagers who like to use the plinths as a skate park. The park itself is pleasant enough with places to sit and an outdoor café just by the main entrance. It also contains the Levski football stadium. One of the nicest things about Sofia is that the streets are not crammed together but are usually quite wide and offer places to stop for a rest and to take in your surroundings. For example, when we went to look at the Alexander Nevski church, we found seats outside in front of and behind the church. It's a virtually traffic-free area making it pleasant to sit down ...

Sofia, so good!

Advantages: Great large town, that's compact and safe to explore
Disadvantages: Probably only enough for a weekend; the Cyrillic language

For the first time theediscerning is hereby dabbling in foreign climes - no, not a first trip abroad, but a debut excursion into the esteemed realm of Ciao travel writers. That's what these competition thingies are for, of course. To start with, a smallish city both tucked away in the middle of Eastern Europe's old Soviet / Warsaw Pact areas, yet far enough away from us in the UK to have some of the mystery and oddity the near east brings - Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. You will increasingly see this as a location for a long weekend holiday, for it is yet another fine eastern European city falling under the tourism industry's eye. With Bulgaria possibly entering the Eurozone in 2007, the urge is to go before it all gets changed. The history of the country is far too complex to summarise here, but just one corner of Sofia ...

Review of Sofia (Bulgaria)

Right up my alley.

Advantages: Great vegetarian food, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: Small cafe, so can be a bit crowded at busy times

• Address: 1a Cannon court, Longrow West, Nottingham, NG1 6JE • Tel: +44 (0)115 955 1013 Opening Times: Mon - Tues: 11:00 - 18:00 Wed - Sat: 11:00 - 21:30 Sun: Closed. I'm not a vegetarian - although I've made several attempts to become one in the past , only to fall on my face at the merest sniff of a sausage. But I have several good veggie friends, and every so often we'll go out for a bit to eat in the city centre . Nottingham has a couple of good restaurants with vegetarian options, but these options are often limited, or simply mean that the meats been taken out and nothing added to replace it. So we like the Alley Café, an entirely vegetarian venue that also serves alcohol (always a bonus). I first discovered the Alley Café through a friend, which is probably how 99% of the customers discovered it ...
