Bibi's is not easy to find. Perhaps that's why it is so busy all the time; it's almost like being invited into some sort of club once you know where it is.
Located down a side street, just off one of the main city centre roads, Bibi's is a wonderfully relaxed restaurant, which has a fabulous atmosphere. It's one of those places where, despite the fact that the noise level is always hovering somewhere between "hubbub" and "din", every table seems to be a world of it's own, and it is easy to share a quiet romantic night with the lucky person of your choice.
Before I first went there, I had heard that the waiter's were not especially helpful or friendly, and that the food wasn't great. I can only assume that my friend had either a) gone when everyone was having a particularly bad night, b) had gone to an entirely different restaurant and got them confused, or c) was working for the competition. Whatever the reason, I was glad to find that their prognosis was incorrect. From the word go, when we were met by a smiling maitre'd, I found the staff to be very polite and helpful, despite the fact that the place was packed to the rafters, and people were actually having to wait for over an hour to be seated (I'll explain why in a moment). Under all the pressure of lots of people complaining, and I never once saw the Maitre'd let her smile slip. What a pro.
Now, the reason for the seating delay was that, unfortunately, weekend tables are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, with no bookings, which meant that, by the time we arrived, we ended up in a queue that gave us a 1hr 30mins wait (At least, the last time I went that's what happened. Ring first and make sure though!). I will say one thing though - it was worth it.
As with just about anywhere you care to mention, the food at Bibi's is not cheap. However, it is by no means as expensive as a lot of places I've been. For two people, our meal came to about £50, including starters, a dessert, coffees and the tip, which I thought was excellent. Also, the food itself is superb, and was served quickly too, although I suppose after waiting for so long for a table, it's just as well! Both meat and vegetables were prepared perfectly, and the dessert menu was a nightmare - how to decide from so many good things?! Portions are as you would expect, although I can safely say that we were not hungry afterwards.
The restaurant has a self-contained bar, so those lengthy waits become a lot more bearable, and there is also a very pleasant veranda, from which you can sit and watch the world go by. And, with the major bars and clubs very nearby, and large parties catered for, Bibi's makes a perfect start to a good group night out, or a perfect evening for couples.
