I needed some more work clothes (boo, hiss!) and I had a day off work, so I thought Id make my annual trip to Bicester Village retail outlet to try and snap up some bargains.
Location Bicester town is about 30 miles from Milton Keynes and 15 miles from Oxford. For those coming in on the M40, it is only 3 miles from junction 9. When you approach Bicester from any direction, there are brown signs directing you to the retail park. It is surrounded by free parking, but even that can get quite full, especially at weekends and sale periods. I arrived at 12:00 on a working Friday (but some people were still off for Christmas) and the car park was very nearly full, with car park attendants directing you to the few remaining spaces. You can also travel by train to Bicester North station where a free shuttle bus runs on Thursday to Sunday. Taxis are available form the station, or you can cath a coach from London Victoria every Wednesday and Saturday.
Facilities and opening times Most of the shops have Bicester Village leaflets available, which include a map (very useful). The retail park is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day including Sundays an Bank Holidays (I assume this excludes Christmas, but it doesnt say so). Guide dogs are welcome. Facilities include, toilets (x3 with baby changing facilities and disabled facilities), telephones, cashpoint machines, garden and play area (x2) and a Tourist Information Centre. As the Village is all on one level, there are no stairs to climb, making it easier for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Most of the shops are quite spacious and beautifully laid out.
Shops Ill try to give a comprehensive list here, as it will make all the difference whether you want to make the trip or not if your favourite stores are there. I did not visit them all, but where I did I will give my views (hope I dont offend anyone if I didnt like the store and it is your favourite).
Clothes & shoes Aquascutum rather old fashioned looking clothes. I heard one young girl ask her friend if she recognised some of her grannys

Burberry need I say more? Caf Coton mens French shirts Cerruti 1881 mens and womens designer clothes Charles Jourdan French designer shoes and accessories Charles Tyrwhitt mens and womens shirts Calvin Klein surprisingly expensive designer shop. Clarks the high street store seems to chuck out all its old sales items here. Real bargains are to be had. I was tempted by a few things from here, but resisted. Nitiva Eastern influenced clothes Oscar Jacobson mens clothes and golf wear Paul Smith mens and childrens clothes and womens accessories. Polo Ralph Lauren - I had a quick look in this shop hoping for more than rows of their polo shirts, but was disappointed. Maybe if I had looked harder I would have found something Petit Bateau French childrenswear Phase Eight ladies fashion Redgreen casualwear for men and women Racing Green another of my favourite shops selling great priced quality mens and womens clothing. Unfortunately I didnt find anything here on this visit, but I was after particular things this time and not just any old bargain. Reebok some great bargains to be had here. Mainly trainers, but they also have a selection of sportswear. Robert Clergerie handcrafted French shoes and accessories. Salvatore Ferragamo womens and mens fashion and shoes. Sand mens and womens formal and casual; wear. Savoy Taylors Guild mens tailoring and formal wear. The Designer Room covering brands like Maska and Jasper Conran. Timberland mens clothing and footwear. Tods mens and womens shoes and accessories. Tog 24 walking and climbing clothes. Tommy Hilfiger American sport and jeanswear. Triumph womens lingerie, swimwear and nightwear. The discounts were pretty good in this shop, although the range of sizes and designs was not huge. TSE designer knitwear for men and women. Vans shoes skate, surf and snowboarding footwear shop Versace designer fashions for men and women. Warners underwear shop Whistles womens contemporary fashions
Things for the home and gifts Books etc. similar to the discount stores you get in most high streets. Bose a very posh looking home entertainment store, specialising in surround soundmulti media. Bodum high quality houseware products Descamps beds and baths Kenneth Turner home fragrances, pot pourri, vases etc. Links designer jewellery and gifts Molton Brownmake up and bath products. I was very annoyed as I didnt find this shop and then forgot to look it up on the map before I left. Oh well, maybe nest time. I wanted to buy all the goodies that have been recommended on Ciao. Oneida a range of cutlery and crockery. Unfortunately, this is the closest place I can get my Oneida cutlery since both the co-op and House of Frazer stopped selling it. Penhaligons perfumes and gifts Playtime Toys childrens toys Prices an excellent candle shop selling a range of candle gifts at excellent prices. Samsonite excellent luggage and travel goods shop. Tag Heuer reading another opinion on Bicester Village on Ciao recently, it appears this shop offers huge discounts on designer watches. The Cosmetics Company Store this shop did have some cosmetics bargains, but the choices were quite limited. They have brands like Estee Lauder, Tommy Hilfiger and Clinique. Villeroy & Boch a very expensive china, crystal and gift store. Waterford Wedgewood table wear, crystal, gifts and homewear shop. The White Company a very attractive linen store Woods of Windsor the smell of this shop is wonderful it almost rivals Lush! Full of perfumes and toiletry gifts. Great for granny and most females in the family.
Food Culpeper herbs and spices Pret A Manger over priced sandwich, cake and drink shop. It has limited seating inside and outside, but never enough on any of the visits I have been there. There have always been big queues and the food is not that special. Starbucks Coffee the usual offering from Starbucks here. Barrows - there are varioous food barrows in the Village, selling things like doughnuts and crepes.
Bargains Well I was a bit disappointed to be honest, as some of the prices were still way too high for my liking. However I managed to buy some shoes reduced from 99 to 39, a pair of Benetton trousers for 10 (reduced from 40) and a summer skirt from Benetton reduced from 29 to 5. To give you an idea of some of the designer bargains available I saw Nicole Farhi coats reduced from 425 to 125 and some DKNY trousers reduced from 225 to 55. The leaflet says that they offer up to 60% off. For present ideas, visit Woods of Windsor and Price's Candles, where much of their stock is half of the RRP.
Criticisms It is an outdoor centre! Every time I go I get wet and cold, but hot and sweaty inside the shops. It is a real shame they didnt spend that bit extra to have a covered walkway, or even better to have made it an indoor centre in the first place. There are not enough places to eat. I went to buy a sandwich (at rip off prices) at Pret a Manger, to find the queues huge I was about 15th in the queue and there were about 6 queues. I gave up and went to Tescos just round the corner LOL. There are a couple of nice barrows selling food, but in the winter it is just too cold and wet to eat outside. There are too many posh designer shops for me (I know why did I go?). I really object to paying ridiculous prices for some of the poor quality tat they are selling, just because it has the letters DKNY plastered on it. Obviously this will not bother designer clothes fans, and Im not saying that the majority of the goods are poor quality. I wish they had a bit more variety of shops. So many of them just look exactly the same. A wider variety of gifts would be nice. During the sales, there are often not any more bargains than normal. I presume many of the shops believe they have already given enough discount.
And finally If you are into designer clothes, then this place is a must you could save a fortune! If you want cheaper bargains, it is probably not your place (I really must remember this next time I am tempted to go). You can sign up for a regular newsletters when you go in many of the shops and you will be informed of special events etc. The shops do change quite often, so if you like the place, it is worth going quite regularly to catch the new shops. Dont bother going at sales time as there are not that many additional bargains to be had. If you go in the winter, wrap up warm, and take your own lunch if you dont want to queue or get ripped off. Go off peak to ensure a parking space. But most of all, if you do go enjoy your day!
Thanks for that, thinking of moving to the Bicester area and this was full of useful info, especially about the shuttle bus. Ciao ought to sort out the London bit in the title though, it's nowhere near London! Thanks again, great review. Sal x

I have been here before and bought some candles in the Price shop. The only thing is, I cant remember if the clothes were set out neatly as I cant stand shopping when the whole shop is in a mess coz of the sales!
PS how do you get those bold dots in your ops?
they are the biz!

Well, I'm always up for a bargain, and anyone who puts 'boo, hiss' in their op gets a VH from me, lol. I think they sound soo good together (but I'm gonna shut up now, cos you probably think I'm a bit strange). Great op! Matthew
