Birmingham once renowned for it's 60's style concrete fashion has transformed it self in to one of the best cities in the UK today.

Birmingham has lifted the heavy concrete restraints it once had and instead has replaced them with a smothering of modern looking steel and glass buildings. And the most famous of these transformations has to be the Bullring.

The Bullring was the jewel in the crown for early 60's Birmingham but by the 1990's it was looking old and somewhat a eye sore on the surroundings. But the year of 2003 saw the opening of the new Bullring or "Europe's new shopping capitol" as it promotes it self. The Bullring is a marvel of glass and design, it covers 3 levels all covered by a wonderous glass ceiling that you can't but help stop and stare at, inside of this enormous construction are 2 large department stores, On the East side you have the very swankey Selfridges&co store which is festooned with 15,000 aluminum disc's on the outside in a sexy curvey kind of shape, on the other side is Debenhams which have taken a very straight line minamilist apporach - both very impressive respectivley. In between these two giant of stores you have a further 140 stores all large in size for a shopping mall. H&M and NEXT both have stores that cover all 3 levels of the Bullring - thats what is so suprising and when you realise the sheer scale of this new shopping area. Gone are the small pokey stores that sell a selection of their products that you ususally get within a shopping mall and hail the large superstores that seem to be present in the Bullring. You have one of the first Dixons XL in the UK a huge 2 level Dixons store selling everything you could imagine, then you have the 2 level Topman/Topshop store which also offer their boutique collection which is not offered in every store, they also have a bar area which is perfect to chill out in whilst your partner is trying on all the clothes from the vast array of rails. For all the people who are loyal fans of sport wear you are also treated to a superb NIKE store plus many other sporting retailers such as: all:sports, soccer Sports, JD Sports and so on. And for all the female fashion concious (thats about 99.9% of the UK female population) you can indulge in stores such as: Karen Millen, Oasis, Warehouse, Mango, All saints, Mikey, Miss Sixty, Dune, Faith, Monsoon and hundreds more. For the men there is FCUK, Bank, Republic, Life, Billabong and lots more.

For young fashion trends head to Selfridges which offer a shopping experience that will not be found anywhere else in the UK, You have 4 levels: Level 1 is the foodhall offering a gourmet of food such as chience, thai, indian, italian, chocolate and champagne plus favourites such as YO! Sushi. Level 2 is men and women Spirit (High Street Fashion) plus technology, this floor takes an industrial look with rugged fixtures, it boasts a live DJ, Ben & Jerrys ice cream counter a chill out area plus a whole selection of fantastic brands such as - G-Star, PePe Jeans, Diesel, Fullcircle, Nudie Jeans, Franklin & Marshall, Levi's, Firetrap, Two Legs, One True Saxon and lots more! The Technology room is a lot of fun! A mixture of Green and black - the flooring is like a tar surface such as the stuff you would find at a park, and the walls have padded foam on - technology sell items such as plasma TV's, Apple ipods, Mac computers and PC's, music equipement and loads more stuff. Moving up to Level 3 things become more sophisticated here is Mens Department/Accessories and the Beauty hall. The mens department has clean lines a carpeted area! and very attentive staff. Here you can indulge yourself in whats called SuperBrands! Brands such as Alexandra McQueen, Versace, Hugo Boss, Junk de Lux, Y3, Viviene Westwood, Paul Smith and so on! Accessories offer top of the range sunglasses, beautifully crafted cuff links and our favourite one of very few sale outlets for the very impressive VERTU mobile phone, one of these would set you back from £4,000! Jenifer Lopez has one of course! The Beauty Hall is home to some of the best make up producers in the world, MAC, Armani Cosmetics, Khiel, Lancome, Stila all have stands here. Plus a large array of perfumes from all designers of course darling!
Upwards and onwards Level 4 is sleek, high quality, white washed, with the clothing perfectly organised - this is womens zone. Gucci, Dior and Prada all have shop fits here selling their finest jewellery, bags and shoes plus accessories. You can pick your self up some Jimmy Choo shoes, Stella McCartney clothing, a little something from Yanuk jeans, Juicy couture, Ghost, wheels and Doll baby plus many other various designers that have made their debut outside of London. And if you are feeling a little bit saucy why not take a trip to the Agent Provator counter in the Underwear department. Up on this zone is the Gallery Resteraunt where you are sitting on a balconey over looking the East side of the Bullring Shopping Mall - it offers a spectacular view to sit and dine from. To get you to all these levels you are ferred on large white tubular esculators in the central atrium, if you are on the food hall level (Level 1) and look up you will see the glamourous glass sky plane that lets a shaft of light enter the building - the only natural source of lighting this building has.

All in all the Bullring has pumped excitment back in to Birmingham, and with over 30 million visitors that passed through the doors in it's first year proves it has the hearts of shoppers. But Birmingham does not end there, venture outside of the bullring and you will find boutique stores in the Mailbox such as Armani, DKNY, Hugo Boss and a very lovely if somewhat small harvey Nichols. Take a trip to Brindley Place it has a great buzz about the place and is a must to see, we suggest you sit down and grab a drink whilst overlooking the refurbished cannels. And Birminghams proof that it is turning in to a cosmopolitan city with a new following of fashion concious people is the arrival of stores such as the very first stand alone store in England out side of London of Louis Vuitton located on Temple Street. Urban Outfitters have also taken a space on Birmingham's New Street which is due to open early nexy year plus other companies are all looking for prime retail space within Birmingham.

If Night Life is what your after too Birmingham does not disapoint, You can strole along the 1 mile stretch which is known as Broad Street - although this is usually prone to drunken fights. The best place is to head to China Town with bars such as SoBar and Indie Bar offering a cool place to meet new people, the gay quater on hurst street also offers a great selection of clubs such as Route2 and DV8.

SO You want to Visit - Where to Stay?
For a touch of class and sophistication we suggest the mal maison in the mailBox - located right in the heart of the City its in a great location for you to walk to the shops and all the attractions. Prices start from around £99 per room per night.
Or the Days Inn also located in the mail Box offers the budget traveler accommodation from £59 per night and the rooms are a very good standard.
Other Hotels to try which are all in great locations are: Travel Inn, Burlington Hotel, City inn and the Hyatt.

DISABLED ACCESS
Birmingham was recently voted one of the best cities for disabled people. If you are coming in by car for a one day shopping visit we suggest you park in the Bullring car park (Underneath Selfridges) here you can get a lift up to the shopping levels - all shopping levels are spacious with plenty of room, all shopsing withing the Bullring also all have large entrances so you will not have any hassle. Outside of the Bullring the shopping areas have all be pedestrianised and thus are mainly on one flat level with no steps to consider, and even when there are steps 9 times out of 10 there will be a ramp to accommodate wheel chair users. The Mal Maison is disabled friendly, but we would advise against the Days Inn for wheel chair users.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
Every year Birmingham plays host to the German Christmas markets which begin around the middle of Novmber time. Starting off at New Street they stretch up to Victoria Sqaure, Each year it becomes larger and is very popular. You can get lots of weird and wonderful things - we love the sugar coated cashew nuts. Yummy!

We also suggest taking a trip to: Sea Life centre Located in brindly Place, Cadburys World Located in bournville - a short train ride from Birmingham New Street station, Millenium Point which houses a IMax cinema, and if you really are a Cinema Buff take a trip to the UK's largest cinema multiplex STAR CITY which has 30 screens and the UK largest casino! www.myvue.co.uk for full details.

As a Brummie now living in Cornwall, I have to say well done lad! I used to hate going into Birmingham, it was always so dirty, but it's pretty now isn't it?! (Well as pretty as a city can be!) Nice review, well done.
