Roll up For the Bright Lights of, erm, Brum

Advantages: Something for everyone.
Disadvantages: Some people are put off going to the theatre-they think it is for the wealthy upper classes-come on, I prove that one wrong!

I have lived in Birmingham for nearly all my life, and although it has its bad points (as does any large city), I will defend it from criticism!

If I lived in London I would go to the theatre every week on standby tickets and be able to see a different show each time. Birmingham can not quite live up to that, although there is a lot of entertainment to be had, *if* you know where to look.

I will go through some of ...
...most of the theatres in Birmingham (and in Stratford, but that's another story). I am going to really enjoy writing this, as I love the theatre, I love watching plays and performing in them, and I love the actual buildings of theatres. There is something magical about them, and many of the older ones are haunted by the ghosts of actors (allegedly).

Hopefully the information will be of some use for some people, but if not, enjoy the ... more

Hippodrome 2001- big and beautiful

Advantages: Big shows for Brum in 2001
Disadvantages: Its closed at the moment

The Birmingham Hippodrome- the 'Old Lady' of Hurst Street- built in 1899 is currently closed for major refurbishment thanks in no small part to a rather hefty £29.3 million lottery grant. This money will be used to transform the exterior of the theatre into a magnificent glass-fronted structure that will dominate the skyline. This is a joint venture between the Hippodrome, Birmingham Royal Ballet and the DanceXchange and the new three-storied building ...
...of these changes is that Birmingham will have a truly world-class venue for live theatre to rival anything in London. Peter Tod, the theatre director, has already announced that Miss Saigon will be amongst the first shows to grace the next stage in the summer of 2001. The theatre is due to re-open beween March-May 2001 with the Birmingham Royal Ballet performing the world premiere of Arthur Part II, the brain-child of Artistic Director David Bintley ...

Lets Wok around the Wok!!

Advantages: Cheap, Lots of choice.
Disadvantages: Gets Very Busy.

The first time I went to the Big Wok was with a colleague from work, its in a side street near The Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham, if I hadn't been taken there I would of never have gone as it quite easy to drive past. The location isn't ideal as it is quite easy to miss, but it is quite close to the bars and clubs in the Arcadian centre. We usually park in the Arcadian centre car park but if that's full there is an NCP car park right next to the Big Wok The Address: 5 Wrottesley Street, Birmingham Telephone Number: 0121 666 6800 Since being introduced I have gone back several times, its ideal if you want a cheap meal before going to theatre. Depending on time visiting you may have to queue before being able to get in. The busiest times I have found are Friday and Saturday nights also on Sunday lunchtime. Also if there is ...

A glee-ful night out!

Advantages: wide range of acts, not just comedy
Disadvantages: not much leg room, some visability problems

, but you have to travel over water to get there from Brum) as well as new talents and complete unknowns. The thing I love about Glee is it's imtimacy. Having seen comedians at both the larger Birmingham Theatres (like the Hippodrome or the Alex) and then again at the Glee Club I have to say I prefer their Glee club acts. There's a lot more interaction with the audience (for example Rich Hall arguing with a lad from Halesowen for five minutes or Ross Noble asking a woman sitting in front of him why her thumb was bandaged up). But it's not just comedy. The Glee also offers Ceroc classes (apparently it's a type of french Jive) and live music from local bands and the next big thing. The only disadvantages to the Glee Club are that if you're a tall chap (like my husband) you'll find the lack of leg-room a pain (literally), and it ...

Cheap Chow for Ciao chums

Disadvantages: Soooo Hot, Very busy

and pubs of the area as well as the Birmingham Hippodrome. Down a small side street opposite an Ibis hotel it would be easy to miss it if you didn?t know what you were looking for. The Address: 5 Wrottesley Street, Birmingham Telephone Number: 0121 666 6800 There is also a Big Wok in Lincoln Interior ******* Well the inside is a lot like what I would imagine the works canteen at Ikea would look like. It?s basic, pale ?wood? tables of various sizes and shapes set in large brightly lit painted in a plain cream colour. It has a clean minimalist look, the owners of the restaurant have obviously sacrificed sumptuous surroundings in order to offer cheap food. A mezzanine floor housed a small smoker?s area, although this added the inconvenience of having to walk down the stairs to get your food (but that?ll teach you for smoking ...
