Well to start of i'll get it out of my system... im a quater german, that hails from the black forest town of Triberg (held the Ice skating winter olypics back in the 20's!). But being embarassed of my heritage is something I am most ceratinly NOT. The Black Forest is a Wonderful Place to go on holiday for the young and old alike. There's something to do for everyone.
During the summer the blackforest is made up of rolling hills, beautiful fields of flowers and some of the most breathtaking scenary in the whole of Europe. It is EXCELLENT hill walking territory, with the guest houses FULL to the brim during the summer months. Excellent places to go include the town of Schonwald, which translates into 'Beautiful valley' which has an amazing view coupled with some of the best restaurants in the black forest.
The black Forest is not only a summer vacation spot however. During the winter months there is usually a decent covering of snow, trnasforming it into a 'winter-wonderland'. It is at this time of season you can really see why it's called the black forest, as the tree line stands out like a dark Silhouette. There are lots of freindly shops in and around triberg and schonach, two traditionally black-forest town. Triberg is especailly special in winter with the waterfall gushing down a steep ravine, and over huge boulders. It is an amazing experience. triberg also has a 'Rudehlbahn' a mile long sledging run through beautiful forests ideal for children and adults alike!
There is also a festival in february called 'fasnach' where the local viallgers dress up as devils with torches and parade through town at night. Large floats and marching bands flood the streets with men on stilts throwing sweets to the crowd! A breathtaking experience!
The BlackForest also has facilities for wintersports at the large resort of 'feldberg' almost an hour away from triberg, through windy country roads. The drive is anything but boring though as you pass through ravines and by the huge lake at Neustadt. The resort is surprisingly modern with chairlifts and electronic passes, and is an ideal day trip for all the family. The view at the top is also brilliant, atop of these alpine foothills you can see the whole alp range! Not to be missed!
The black forest is relatively reasonable, cheaper in the slower winter months during the smaller skiing season. It is an excellent alternative to the those skiiers who want to avoid the commercialism of todays alpine reosrts.
Comes HIGHLY recommended. who knows, maybe i'll see you there this year. :)
Advantages: Cheap, unlimited breakfast, good location for exploring the region Disadvantages: Dark, some unwanted noise
~~~ Overview & Appearance ~~~
I first came across the two-star related Hotel Atelys whilst organising a three day break for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary in August 2006 since which time we have had a second stay in July 2007. I chose the Atelys because I had planned a visit to the excellent Europa Park situated just across the River Rhine in Germany and had found all of the hotels in the Germany / BlackForest region to be far too expensive.
Situated in the Lingolsheim suburb of Strasbourg, the Atelys is situated in a semi-industrial area two minutes walk from the Lingolsheim train station and within a short taxi ride from Strasbourg international airport. The hotel is also conveniently located near to major roads leading to Germany or elswhere within the Alsace region of France and beyond.
The hotel has 78 rooms ...
Advantages: Great transport, clean, efficient, full of character Disadvantages: They like football as much as the English
As Freiburg is still very fresh in the mind after our visit there last weekend (actually a long weekend- Thursday to Monday) it seemed appropriate to write about it.
Preconceptions
Well, oddly enough I'd never visited any part of Germany before so I didn't have that many preconceptions apart from some vague images whirling around in my head of people drinking vast amounts of beer at long tables and scoffing BlackForest Gateau (particularly as Freiburg is in the far south of Germany and near the BlackForest). There was plenty of the former but not much of the latter- however a friend of ours with whom we were meeting up directed me to a restaurant that apparently served some of the best BlackForest Gateau- and it was beyond delicious.
Getting There
Freiburg is about an hour and a half's flight (plus just under an hour's bus ...
Advantages: beautiful place, people, culture, weather Disadvantages: not for clubbers
I was lucky enough to visit Freiburg just under a year ago and I fell in love with the place. It is a reasoanbly small village in the south east of Germany right next to the BlackForest and it is so picturesque it is unblievable!
I had been invited to stay there as part of an exchange my college was running and when my future partner to be sent me a book of Freiburg I didn't believe it could possibly look as wondeful as it did in the book, but it exceeded my expectations!
There is so much to see and do in Freiburg. The landscape is breathtaking, the architectre is amazing and the people are so friendly! If you do visit you must take a stroll in the BlackForest situated nearby, then don't forget to travel to the town's highest point from which you can see the entire area in all its glory! Then visit the Münster (Cathedral ...
