Another aspect of Mauritius

Advantages: Stunning scenery, helpful staff
Disadvantages: Mosquitoes!

The Black River Gorges National Park allows you to explore a more rugged and truly spectacular aspect of the island.
My partner and I travelled to Mauritius last October, staying in a self-catering apartment in Flic-en-Flac. Unlike most visitors to Mauritius, sitting on the beach all day was never part of our plan, and we wanted to make the most of our fortnight there by exploring the island.

...you walk on the large black rocks which give the river its name, crossing back and forth across the river - sometimes across bridges, and sometimes from rock to rock that stick out of shallower water. We found the route fascinating to follow, and felt like true adventurers as we clambered across the rocks and splashed through the river! Mauritius: Paradise on Earth

Advantages: Beautiful island, lovely sea, gorgeous weather
Disadvantages: Lack of drinking water, water gets stopped, roads in poor condition

!), which is great value for a fun day out. My underwater walking cost me just £13 for 25 minutes under the water, an experience I will never forget. Black River Gorge is also worth a see. It is a giant gorge in inland Mauritius. It is actually a National Park, although you don't have to actually go in to experience the gorge. We had a local taking us around the island who knew the best spots and we had a perfect view of the gorge from a great viewpoint. Grand Bassin is another must-see. It is considered to be a sacred lake in Mauritius, it is said the waters from the lake make contact with the waters of the holy Ganges of India, so is a sacred place. There are many Indian statues around the lake, so you can see this is clearly a religious place for the Indian community of Mauritius. The last attraction I would recommend is Chamarel, where ...
