Blackpool is still one of the most visited seaside towns in the UK, with millions of visitors pouring in every year. Although Blackpool appears to many as being dirty and scruffy, there are many wonderful places to visit.
Blackpool is not just the "Pleasure Beach", although this seems to be the place that everybody flocks to, especially young people. There are far more things to see and do, and you do not need to travel many miles to find them.
I would just like to give a small mention, to some of the other attractions that help make Blackpool special for me.
This proud Victorian landmark, recently restored to it's original glory, has always known how to entertain holidaymakers and day trippers alike. Tower World offers floor after floor of indoor entertainment, which even the great British weather cannot spoil, there's so much going on to keep the entire family amused for the whole day - such as the famous Tower Aquarium, Dawn of Ages ride, Jungle Jim's adventure playground.
A trip to the Tower is never complete without experiencing the splendour of the listed ballroom, with its ornate ceiling. One
of the great attractions here, is seeing the organ arise from beneath the stage, whilst being played at the same time. The ballroom is a lovely place in which to spend a couple of relaxing hours, for those who want to dance or simply listen and enjoy.
The legendary Tower Circus, in it's basement auditorium, forms part of the Towers inclusive entertainment. As well as watching several great shows daily, visitors can also marvel at a spectacular state of the art Laser Fantasy on four giant screens. To me it is well worth paying the entrance fee, just to see the circus. The tower is open every day from Easter onwards including all Christmas week.
The Sea Life Centre is at the heart of the Golden Mile, gives you more than just a passing glimpse of the majesty of Neptune's world beneath the waves.
There's no need to take your wetsuit, but try walking through the spectacular crystal tunnel and stand just inches away from a six foot shark, as it glides towards then over you bearing row after row of jagged, razor sharp teeth. At the other end of the fish scales, you could be splashed by a big, friendly Stingray rising to the surface for a feed. And a special Sea Lab provides the chance to handle sturdy rock pool creatures like crabs and starfish.
*** The Winter Gardens.
Marvel at the gilded exuberance of Blackpool's Winter Gardens, newly restored to pristine glory. With the Empress Ballroom and Opera House, Britain's biggest theatre were you can see many great shows. When built the architects crammed the sprawling 4 and a half acre site with bits and pieces from dream palaces of a dozen ages and cultures. Vast, yet full of intimate corners, the Wintergardens is partly Tudor England, partly Strauss's Vienna, partly Seville in its golden age, partly ancient Rome.
Situated on Central Promenade, the world famous Waxwork exhibition is open daily throughout the season from Easter to the end of October. The famous and the infamous personalities of royalty, film stars, pop idols, television personalities, politicians, world leaders are all portrayed here in wax. For those who like blood and guts then the Chamber of Horrors is a must, with its many blood-curdling exhibits, but this is definitely not for the faint-hearted. New and exciting tableaux and figures are introduced every season and there is an optional Anatomy Exhibition for adults only.
A holiday would not be complete, I feel without a visit to Blackpool Zoo. You don't have to travel miles to get there, it's only two miles from the Promenade, and the clever landscaping makes it easy on the feet. Blackpool Zoo is said to be one of the most modern in Europe, with a carefully planned out environment of spacious moated pens, lakes and islands. I would recommend you take a camera so that you can get some terrific pictures of the big zoo favourites, like lions, tigers, giraffes, apes and a fine collection of marsupials. A family favourite of ours is feeding time for the sea lions, they love to be watched and put on a great show.
Home of the Pepsi Max Big One, which is the tallest, fastest rollercoaster in the world plus over 150 other great rides and attractions. There is also Beaver CreekTheme Park for children, the Spectacular Ice Show, the Illusion Show, the International Circus. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. There is also a disco and ice skating rink. Parking is not usually a problem as there is a really Large car which costs, I think about £5 a day.
*** Blackpool Illuminations.
Every autumn, when other seaside resorts close down, Blackpool becomes a blaze of coloured lights with "the greatest free show on earth" - Blackpool Illuminations. The display stretches along Blackpool's famous seafront for over five miles transforming the Promenade into a wonderland of colour. Although many of the lights are repeated year after year, they do normally add new sections and new displays each year. So take a trip to Blackpool lights, it's so much nicer with the lights on.
See the lights in 2001 from 31st August to 4th November.
*** Blackpool Piers.
Blackpool has three splendid piers, North pier, Central pier and South pier. All three piers have theatres, restaurants, shops, arcades and bars. There is no chance of overlooking Central Pier unless you are doing it from the top of the 108 feet high illuminated Big Wheel, which is to be found on the North pier.
*** The Sandcastle.
Go on in, the water's fine and always warm, inside. You don't need a bucket and spade to enjoy the seafront Sandcastle with its tropical temperatures and swirling slides, flumes and tubes to ensure a thrill packed soaking. If you prefer to watch instead there are plenty of 'sun spots' alongside the four pool areas, with plenty of sun loungers and tables and chairs.
*** Blackpool Trams.
The tram is a great way to get from one end of Blackpool to the other. The track stretches for 12 miles along the Promenade. Blackpool electric trams range from finely restored cars from years past, to customised feature trams for use during the Illuminations.
*** My Overall Opinion On Blackpool.
With Blackpool only being an hours drive from where I live, I have found myself spending many a happy day or weekend there. In Blackpool you will almost certainly find something to suit all ages, no matter what the weather is doing. With plenty of arcades and cafes along the sea front, you are never far away from being able to take a most welcome rest.
