If you tell anybody that you on your way to Blackpool the first thing they will probably ask you is “Will you be buying a Kiss Me Quick hat?”
The sight of funny hats, weird wigs and unusual clothing seems to epitomise a lot of what Blackpool is all about. It is the sort of seaside resort that you either love or hate. We seem to end up there about once every two years and love it, but after a couple of days we have had enough and are glad to making our way home.
Blackpool is the largest seaside resort I know with an enormous beach that goes on for miles. The main part of the sea front is known as the Golden Mile and I think it must be called this because the pockets of the owners must be lined with gold. During the summer season the town is always packed with visitors, all eager to pour their money into the many amusement arcades
or to buy something to eat from the huge number of restaurants, cafes, take-aways and snack bars.
Around Blackpool there are street after street of hotels and guest houses, all vying for business, all claiming to offer bigger and better facilities than anybody else.
But why is this seaside town so popular? The first answer must be that it is so easy to get to. The M55 motorway seems to almost go right into the heart of Blackpool and when you do arrive by car there is an enormous area right behind the seafront known as “Central Parking”, where there is car park after car park. I have never had a problem finding a space in one of these car parks and I think a lot of other seaside resorts could learn a lot from this, as the last thing you want when arriving at the coast is a long hunt to find somewhere to park your car.
There is a train line that terminates at Blackpool and also a large bus station, as well as a small airport.
Blackpool is very popular because there is no pretence about the place. It claims to offer something for everybody and I believe it succeeds very well at this. To list all of the attractions at Blackpool would take forever and be very tiresome, but perhaps I can just mention a few that attract us. The Pleasure Beach is an enormous fun fair at the southern end of the seafront that demands a visit. The trams running up and down the front are a lovely sight and a very convenient way of getting about. The piers offer a whole range of facilities from amusements to theatre shows and give the chance to breathe in that wonderful sea air.
The people who tend to visit Blackpool are often very down to earth and know how to enjoy themselves. During the day people enjoy the beach, the arcades and the food, whilst at night the bars and clubs bring a whole different character to the town. If you wander around in the early hours of the morning the town is almost as busy as during the middle of the day.
Blackpool has managed to extend its summer season by a couple of months by having the very famous illuminations. These lights and displays stretch along the whole of the seafront and are complimented by a number of the trams also being illuminated. This display draws crowds from all over the country during September and October.
The Winter Gardens complex has often been used for political party annual conferences and also many other organisations use the town’s hotels for meetings and conventions.
For holiday makers the beach is a big attraction. When the tide is out the beach stretches for miles and you will never be short of space. On the beach you will find tea bars, ice creamvans, snack bars and of course donkeys. I can never get over just how many donkeys there are on Blackpool beach.
If you don’t like chips then you may have to look around a bit for meals. It does seem to be Chips with Everything, even Sunday lunches are advertised with chips!
One aspect I don’t like about Blackpool is the large number of people who smoke there. I know this is not the fault of the town, but just the people who visit it, I especially found this annoying when eating. There did seem to be very few restaurants or cafes that had segregated areas for smokers and non-smokers and I would have liked to have seen that.
My own favourite time in Blackpool is about 7.00am when the town is just starting to wake up. Walking along the promenade on a sunny morning is very peaceful and a great way to start the day.
I know that we shall visit Blackpool many more times in the future, but for this year we have had our dose of candy floss and donkeys.
So many people enjoy this town that you know they have got the mix just right. If you have never visited Blackpool then pack your bucket and spade and head for the motorway. It is an experience that everybody should try at least once.
