I live here!
But do I like it? Well, yes it is not too bad in this old seaside town which boasts kiss me kwik hats, sticks of sticky rock, fish ‘n’ chips, sea and sand and family fun. No, it’s not too bad, but let’s look deeper shall we?
~ Plus things - for the Tourist: The average visitor has a lot of things to do here. We have three piers to visit, the Golden Mile, the Pleasure Beach, lots of pubs and arcades, many hotels, The Sand Castle. Some good shops, too (but most are dying out now) and the Empress ballroom and Grand Hall feature some good stars from time to time. Blackpool Zoo and Stanley Park are certainly worth a look.
~ Negative things - for the Tourist: Although the beaches are cleaner, I still would not done my swimming trunks and go for a swim in the sea; there are a lot of tacky shops here, several boasting ‘everything for a quid!’ You get a lot of day-trippers out for a good time (and general p**s up) and they can be rowdy. I would not buy ANYthing to eat from one of the vendors on the front, for fear of food poisoning!
~ Plus things – for the Natives: Hmm, let me think. Seriously, my personal plus things are how we can walk just a short distance and find ourselves on the coast, looking out at the lapping sea. The Zoo and Stanley Park are near at hand and the local pubs out of town are good. (As I younger man I liked to venture to the many nightclubs in the centre).
~ Negative things – for the Natives: I feel as those for eight months a year our town is taken over. We have to contend with drunken youths out from another town, invading our space and showing no respect (I know this sounds stern, but it’s the truth). We have drunken stag/hen nighters. And there is growing talk of making Blackpool Britain’s answer to Las Vegas, with plans that will inevitably go ahead. I am not anti gay, but we have more than out share of gay pubs, too, and there look to be more being built!
~ To summarize: I used to live in another Lancashire town (forgive me Blackburn) and I would not go back, never. Now if I were to be offered a home in the Lakes, I am not saying I would turn the offer down! Blackpool might have its faults, but I am quite happy here.
Now as I write this, the things are staring to gear up for the season ahead. The Big Wheel has its seats back; the Big One is being hosed down. There is a general air of anticipation (or is that ‘daunting?’)
There are faults, but doesn’t everything have them..?
