I was a bit uneasy about going to see this show, as I was not too sure what it was about and whether it would be my scene. I couldn’t have been more wrong as I enjoyed every minute of it.
Blood Brothers was written by Willy Russell. It is set in Liverpool and is about two twins, Mickey and Eddie, who were separated at birth. Their mother (Mrs Johnstone) couldn’t afford to keep twins as she already had two other children so her employer persuaded her to give one to her. They both grow up leading very different lives and when they bump into each other as kids they become best friends. They do not know the truth and their parents ban them from seeing each other. They declare themselves best friends and ‘blood brothers’. Eddie ends up going to live in the country with his rich parents and Mickey is left with their real mum with no money. I will not tell you any more, as I will ruin the storyline for you.
At the minute Lyn Paul is playing Mrs Johnstone. Her role is convincing and she has an excellent singing voice. My personal favourite actor was Stephen Palfreman who played Mickey. His character was played really well and had a great voice as the kid as well as the adult.
What I loved most about this show was the actors playing the children. It was the same actors playing the characters throughout, so you had adults playing children. I found this really funny, as they had obviously spent time working on their roles to make them believable to the audience.
I found the ending really sad and I was nearly in tears. There were some great songs to choose from and I thought the best was ‘Tell me it’s not true.’ The quality of the singing was superb. Other songs included Oh Bright New Day, Sunday afternoon and Easy Terms amongst others.
Blood Brothers is currently in its thirteenth year in the West end. At the minute this musical is been shown at the Phoenix Theatre. I highly recommend that you go and see this musical if you haven’t already.

I love this show! I can't believe though that we were offered tickets for the opening night and my mother refused them because she "didn't like Willy Russel" - her loss - I have seen it now and she hasn't!

Glad you enjoyed the show. There seems to be a terribel stigma about going to see musicals, but this one is a super one to see if you think you don't like them! I was lucky enought to see Stephanie Lawrence play Mrs J, she was amazing. She died recently and will be sadly missed.
