Advantages: Great Sights, Changing Culture.
Disadvantages: Difficult Language

...clothes stores, McDonalds (known in China as the American embassy) and as usual massive construction projects. However go two streets down from any main thoroughfare and you see a different picture of poverty and a more traditional chinese lifestyle. Even in Chinese I managed to navigate the underground passes and even book a ship ride round the port. I also went into a chinese supermarket where I may have been the forst western person to set foot and was amused to see people coming up to peer in my basket to see what I would buy. Shanghai is a microcosm of the old and the new in China. Shanghai has the only working Maglev train capable of speeds of over 500km per hour. My wife insisted on going and so we did. ...The Shanghai Museum is the only museum worth going to in Shanghai. It houses an impressive collection of stone artifacts, jugs, ancient keys dating to 2000 BC and an amazing collection of coins and costumes from China's 120+ ethnic groups. The museum has tried to show the diversity within China and all its composite parts which is truly rare. China normally concentrates on its conformity and its homogenous traits. This museum truly explores all of the richness of China's history through its art. An even more interesting story about the Shanghai Museum is that during the time of the Cultural Revolution, when all art and academic works were being destroyed by the Communist regime, Shanghai's inhabitants donated their furniture, books and paintings to the museum in an effort to preserve them and the history they contained...
