Where Stepney Lives

Advantages: Great afternoon out for the family
Disadvantages: Slightly expensive for the casual visitor

The Bluebell Railway is a steam railway running along the border of West and East Sussex. I have visited it several times over the last few years and it has always provided a good afternoon out.

There are three working stations on the bluebell railway line: Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes and Kingscote. If you are travelling by car, it's best to head to the most southerly station, Shefield Park, where there is plentiful free parking ...
...can be found on the Bluebell Railway website, www.bluebell-railway.co.uk.

The Bluebell, opened in 1960, is the oldest standard gauge preserved line in the UK and is managed and operated largely by volunteers. It runs steam hauled passenger trains daily from April to October, and on selected days during the winter months. The railway owns over 30 locomotives, the most famous possibly being the LBSCR Stroudley Terrier, No. 55 "Stepney", ... more

The Other Sheffield

Disadvantages: Need a car

and villages and not many well known reference points. If I said the nearest town is Haywards Heath, everyone north of Watford and a good many south of it are saying, where? The only practical way is by car. Find the A275 which runs south from Crowborough to Lewes; Sheffield Park is just north of the junction with the A272 which runs west from Maresfield towards Petersfield and the A3. A novel way to get there is by the Bluebell steam railway, which has a station at Sheffield Park. It is a mile from the Garden itself, though, which may be too far depending on the composition of your party. Opening times are 10.30am to 4pm or 6pm depending on the time of year. Closed Mondays except May and October and open weekends only in January. Entrance prices: £6.20, child £3.10, family £15.50. Groups £5.25, child £2.60. Joint ticket with Bluebell ...

Thomas at the South Devon Railway

Advantages: Very pretty, well located to combine with other attractions
Disadvantages: Expensive, lack of display space, no platform tickets available

not have, for example, as many locomotives or wagons on display as there are at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex. For this reason, it seems expensive, especially as you can?t just buy a platform ticket to pop in for an hour or so. Overall though, I would still say that it is worth a visit, although we probably won?t visit again until next year. NB Of the criteria below, only "Value For Money" is applicable. ...

Rail memorabilia such as badges and caps, so eventually you will find something that you would be willing to spend money on. I did, and found a book about the history of trains on the Island that I wouldn't have normally found elsewhere. We left after being here for over four hours and were impressed with what there is to see and what there is to do. It is smaller than the Bluebell Railway; however the level of commitment from volunteers showed me that the competition is welcomed and gives the line its very own identity and I have to say a uniqueness that allows the line to blow its own trumpet with what it has achieved since it opened in 1971. Bottom line is that my expectations were not only met, but very much exceeded. Just be sure to check that they are open on the day you plan to visit. ...
