Most people head for Bogor because of its legendarily beautiful botanical gardens, and pretty spectacular they are too. But Bogor deserves a bit more attention than that. In particular, it's an excellent base from which to expore Jakarta. Anyone who's spent any time in jakarta will know it's a horrible place to stay - the pollution is unbelievable and the city dangerous and unpleasant. Bogor by contrast is clean and cool - a little too prone to rain for my liking, but a very welcome change from Jakarta. The pace of life is much slower and transport is a joy, as you can get anywhere for a few hundred rupiah by catching one of the hundreds of little green bemos that buzz around the city's streets at all hours. It's connected to Jakarta by train and by bus, commuting (which I did for three weeks) takes between an hour and two hours, but is worth the trip. You'll save a fortune too, as the cheap hotels here beat the Jakarta versions hands down and are a fraction of the price.
