Bolzano-Bozen The best of Italy and Austria combined

Advantages: Charming place - Lots to do in winter and summer
Disadvantages: a bit far away from the international airports of Munich, Milan etc.

What a charming town! The Ötzi – the 5000-year old man from the glacier - is absolutely worth seeing in the town’s museum. Not only is he amazingly well preserved, but his clothes and items that he carried with him are too. If you are staying for several days, explore the surrounding area, e.g. go hiking in the Dolomites, or take the gondola up the Ritten, followed by a short train ride in an old fashioned narrow-gauge train and then go for a walk ...
...scenery and clean lovely air thrown in for free. Back in town, pick any of the pub-restaurants for a good value substantial dinner and you are spoilt for choice regarding wines and sumptious Austrian deserts or Italian ice-cream. The town has two universities: the European Academy and the Free University, several castles, a theatre – more than enough to fill a short stay. In winter you can do alpine and nordic skiing nearby. Speak German or Italian, ... more

A couple of very good restaurants.

Advantages: good food
Disadvantages: none

I do travel quite a lot around Italy on business, below are a couple of restaurants I found around Bolzano, which I can recommend. Restaurant Da Cesare. Address: Via Perathoner 15 - BOLZANO Tel. 0471-976638 - Fax. 0471-972792 This is in the centre of the city. The best deal on this restaurant is their fixed price lunch. You can have a 3 course meal at lunch with wine for 25,000 lire, which is currenlty the equivalent of 8 pounds. Servings are ...
...feed themselves on one meal, although I am not sure management there would allow you. At night you can eat with less than 50,000 lire. I would recommend "pasta fatta in casa", pasta made by the houselady, "carni e pesci alla brace" which is a mixed dish with meat and fish cooked on wood fire. The other restaurant is: Ristorante Belle Epoque. Address: Via Laurin 4 - BOLZANO Tel. 0471-311000 - Fax. 0471-311148 Also this restaurant is in the centre ...

Bolzano, best of both worlds

Advantages: big, rich and full of many cultures.
Disadvantages: not a typical Italian city if that's what you are looking for.

Bolzano is said to be the most expensive city in Italy. It shows. It is a fantastic place with a large and attractive centre. The surrounding mountains and hills add to the impression that this city has a very Austrian/German feel about it. That along with the typical German-style ‘Imbiss’ snack bars selling ‘würst’ and the breweries selling German beer, you could begin to think that you were in Germany and not Italy. There ...
...Like all Northern Italian cities, Bolzano has many festivals. In April there is the festival of ham. (Speckfest) The whole city celebrates the tradition of ham making by wearing traditional dress and putting on concerts. At Christmas there is a massive festival with lots of little stands selling many traditional German/Austrian presents and decorations. Being the capital of Süd Tirol, Bolzano is the largest town, however around the area there is ...

A sleepy little town in Italy

Advantages: nice town, good food
Disadvantages: none

Meran is a sleepy little town in South Tirol in Italy. Well, actually it is the second largest city in South Tirol with roughly 40000 inhabitants but the city easily manages to receive this quiet, peaceful feeling many smaller mountain towns have. I spend many childhood holidays there and will always remember it for the nice walks, breathtaking mountain scenery and delicious ice cream (The last one was the most important to me when I was 10) South Tirol is a region in Italy's north and shares borders with Austria and Switzerland. Unsurprisingly German is more wildly spoken than Italian. This mixture between Italian laid-bach lifestyle and German efficiency is quite unique. How to reach Meran: Bolzano is the closest airport to Meran with Bolzano being the capital of South Tirol. Trains to Meran leave every 30min from the main train ...

The iceman cometh

Advantages: A unique archaeological find and stunning research
Disadvantages: An ethical issue

Italy. Bolzano, not Innsbruck. Discovered in 1991 by a German couple, it quickly became obvious that this was not the body of a luckless modern hiker. Although the initial investigations were done in Innsbruck, the importance of the find meant that its precise location relative to the border was subject to almost as close a scrutiny. Eventually he was deemed to be Italian (Ötzino?) by a margin of about 250 feet! So back he went, retracing his steps, as it were, but this time accompanied by armed police and helicopters as the normally peaceful Austrians were not best pleased at this outcome, and "terrorist threats" were made. As we shall see, Ötzi does seem to attract trouble to himself. I have to admit that the discovery had passed me by until we spent a family walking holiday in the Ötztal, where, as I said, he is unavoidable. To ...

Castel Del Monte - The Crown Of Apulia

Advantages: something very special
Disadvantages: a bit far away

slept in Foggia (about 150.000 inhabitants), known to the rest of the country only for its pasta variety ‘orecchiette’ (small ears), its football team and the fact that there’s nothing much to see when it comes to historical buildings, (Scusatemi, Foggiani!) due to an earthquake in 1731 and a bombardment by the Allied Forces during World War II, but known to ME to have very friendly people. It sports one superlative: it’s the third quietest city in Italy, after Livorno in Tuscany and Bolzano in the very north, just south of the border with Austria. If you’ve never been to Southern Italy, you can’t understand that this is surprising news indeed! We go by car along country roads, the castle is about 120 km away (the nearest town is Andria, which is 18 km away), and pass vineyards which stretch up to ...
