Advantages: Standard of living is excellent; the views of the harbour and bridge are superb. Disadvantages: It does get cool in the winter
...I managed to get my year's working visa for Sydney in Aug 98 and headed off there in Sept. First stop of course was Sydney amd I managed to meet up with family and friends who were also travelling.
First we stayed in Nomads hostel on George street, which at that time had recently been done up. Because of the people we met, we had a blast there. But then after two weeks, reality set in and we had to get jobs and find somewhere more permanent. We tried Bondi and all those areas but houses were old and run down. So we decided that as we were not going to be there that long, we would pay the higher rent and stay in the city.
We ended up in Darling Harbour in a two bed, two bath apartment, with security on the door and pool/gym in the basement and BBQ onthe roof. 15 minute walk into the city, across the road was the new harbourside...

...Bondi Beach is the fantastic Place for your after work relaxing. Not only for surfers.
Some people might have heard of Bondi Beach during the Olympics as it was the place where the Beach Volleyball competitions took place. Bondi Beach is probably one of the only surf spots to reach with the local Bus. You just hop on - I believe the blue line - and it takes you and your surfboard or your volleyball or towel right to the beach. By car easy access as well. Just look it up in the map it is just south of Sydney Harbour.
What you get...

The afor mentioned Central Station, main entrance on EDDY AVENUE, is the place to catch all INTRASTATE (meaning within the state) and INTERSTATE trains. It’s also where the INTERSTATE COACH TERMINAL is located.
For tourists there are two special coach services, the SYDNEY and BONDI EXPLORERS. A day pass for each costs A$30 but you can also buy a two-day pass for A$50 which allows you to interchange between the two buses to your hearts content! As Sydney has no form of ‘free’ transport at all I did exactly that and bought myself a two-day pass so I could ‘get my bearings’. Although fifty bucks sounds a lot to spend on a bus ticket I found it to be very good value for money. Each bus, whether it’s the city or Bondi explorer are ‘coach style’ and air-conditioned. They both drive a set two-hour loop...
