Down a little side street off the Avinida De Liberdade stands a little run down building that just happens to serve the best Chicken and Chips in Lisbon if not Europe. From looking at it you would think theres no way I'm eating in there. Be advenurous and you will discover one of Lisbons hidden gems. I found it when working on cruise ships. You can tell if anyone is a career sailor by asking them if they know Bom Jardim. Many a happy lunch have I had there, and part of its popularity probably stems from Mateuswine at £4.00 a bottle.
Legend has it that many years ago a woman was dining on the first floor and could'nt pay her bill. She negated this minor oversite by leaping out the window and disapearing in to the crowds. From then on, anyone who jumps out the window is let of their bill. Unfortunately in the great tradition of legends, it is untrue. During a particularly rowdy session of Mateus drinking, a friend of mine, an ex parachute regiment squaddy, got up and without a word simply leapt out of the window. Unfortunately the management did'nt see the funny side and we still had a bill to pay. The beauty of this place though is that the prices are so cheap. A good meal can be had for as little as £5.00 per person and its a great place to meet the real Lisboans.
A word of warning though. The hot pepper sauce they provide with the meal is HOT. Go easy at first as it has more lag than a Renualt 5 turbo. Otherwise enjoy.
