Jorvik centre: York

Advantages: Very good attraction!!
Disadvantages: Expensive!

The Jorvik center is if you didn't know, situated in the center of York, Yorkshire. Its one of the main attractions in the city and brings in hundreds of tourists and school visitors. The Jorvik Centre (pronounced Yorvic), is a real acheaology site, where the Vikings of York lived thousands of years ago. Its a museum with a twist though, as with "normal" museums, you walk around, you read signs and miss most things, especially if you have kids with you! But, this place is very different, when you enter, your taken into a "time machine", where you sit, and your told a short story, and a scientist takes us back in time to 975AD when the Vikings lived in York. Upon leaving the "time machine", you notice you've been transported back in time, to the old streets of York. You are then taken to a "ride", I say ride, but its not ...

Fathers Guest House, great place in the Cameron Highlands

Advantages: Location, views, surroundings
Disadvantages: Disappointing dorm room

Fathers Guest house has the perfect location on a small hill overlooking the tiny town of Tanah Rata in the Cameron highlands. Situated outside the town, but only a 3 minute walk into it, it has fantastic views and is tranquil but still has access to any activities the town has to offer. If you call the owners in advance letting them known when you will arrive then they will collect you from the town and save the walk up the hill with heavy bags. They also tend to be one of the touts who wander the bus drop off area and so if you arrive by bus then there is almost always someone there who you can ask to get a lift up the hill. Driving up towards the guesthouse the first thing that is obvious is that this is a beautiful area. The views from the top go right across the town and amongst the rolling hills of the area. The Cameron highlands ...

A cry in the dark!

Advantages: Good price, useful location, clean and comfortable
Disadvantages: Breakfast served only in room, poor breakfast, no lock/light working in bathroom

we could stop off for a drink on the way from the train station. On the day of travel we received a phone call from the owner saying that they might be delayed and we were given the code for the door entry system and told where we could find the key to our room. How trusting! The Holmlea is situated in a quiet residential area just a ten minute walk from both the train station and the city centre. There are also pubs, restaurants and shops nearby if you don't want to go into town. For guests arriving by car there is limited on street permit parking. First impressions are good; the exterior is well looked after and though it is small the front garden is attractive. We were able to get inside without a problem and found our room on the top floor. The stairs are quite narrow and a few of the rooms are directly on the corridor, while ...
