BosKoops is small, under advertised cafe in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Situated in a grand 3/4 storey Victorian biulding within a stones throw of Eldon Square (shopping centre) and the Greys Monument , this cafe is centrally placed for shoppers and tourists alike.
The Food and Drink: A wide variety of food on the menu including; 1) home made scones ( cheeze, cherry, fruit, plain) 2) home made quiche (various) 3) a selection of puddings/cakes (variable) 4) sandwhiches 5) tea/coffee 6) fizzy drinks 7) bottled still and sparkling water 8) bottled pure and flavoured fruit drinks.
The Atmosphere: Climbing the old victorian stairs to the first floor you approach a bustling room devided into two (smoking and non smoking) by a central partition. With wooden floors and a mixture of wooden tables and chairs, the atmosphere is relaxed. The cafe is not over-styled and some may suggest it is in need of an image update. The large, multiple windows feed the room with daylight in all seasons. Customers are often found in small groups or sat individually, absorbed in their latest book or newspaper.A small counter is located to the left of the main entrance with multiple staff members ready to take your order.
Prices: very reasonable with a tea and scone costing around Ģ2.
1) This cafe is located on a first floor with steep stairs to its main entrance and therefore has limited access to the elderly and individuals who find ascending stairs difficult.
2) Outside the main entrance is a meeting place for Newcastle upon Tynes teenage 'gothic' population and, although often polite, could be percieved as intimidating to some individuals.
3) Difficult to find a seat in peak times and often when you find one the table has not been cleared because of under-staffing. Eventually,a very hard working member of staff ventures to your table and, whilst seated, she/he quickly scrambles to clean around you.
4) The atmosphere can sometimes be thick with smoke, even in the non smoking section. For non smokers like me, I think this is a horrible atmosphere in which to eat!
5) I have frequently been unimpressed by the level of cleanliness and presentation in this establishment. I have, on several occasions returned glasses or have drank straight from a can/bottle to aviod using the heavily scratched ( from dishwasher), sometimes lip stick or grime marked cups/glasses.
6)The cafe uses a self service system and you carry your food/drinks to a table on a tray. Although this is fine, some individuals may find this a problem as the trays can be quite heavy.
Conclusion:
As you may have guessed by now, this is a cafe I readily avoid. I have always been un-impressed with the level of hygiene and do not like to eat/drink in a smoking environment. Unfortunatley, my best friend adores this cafe (as do many people as I can never recall the cafe being quiet on my visits). She frequently pushes me in the door to grab a quick tea/coffee in the middle of our latest shopping spree and I simply don't have the heart to tell her the truth!
I hope I have given you all a balanced review from which you can draw your own oppinions, Thanks for reading, A.
