Sarajevo, Famous for the wrong reasons!
Advantages: Smart and quaint city. Peaceful now Disadvantages: Still being fixed after the war
My first visit to Sarajevo in Bosnia was a few years ago,- to think this place is twinned with Coventry!
At the time, it was hardly a tourist desitination, and I made a Lada Riva shift like a Ferrari as my skin tone turned a whiter shade of pale due to the onslaught of bullets falling around me.
Fortunately, I, and said Lada made it out of there in just about one piece (The exhaust fell off as I hand break turned around a corner to come face to ... ...your friendly neighbourhood sniper.
Sarajevo is the capital city and largest urban center of Bosnia, It is also the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity, and the de jure capital of the Republika Srpska entity, as well as the center of the Sarajevo Canton.
Sarajevo is located in the Sarajevo valley of Bosnia, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated around the Miljacka river. The city is famous for its traditional religious ...

Mostar, Bosnia Herzegovina
Advantages: So near to W. Europe's tourist hotspots, but so different Disadvantages: Infrastructure harmed after a decade of turbulence
Mostar has a famously tragic history, which should never be forgotten, but you shouldn't let the shadow of the war in the 1990s from overpowering the fantastic experience you will have in Mostar. It is true that bomb-damaged houses dot the streets of the city, a constant reminder of the horrors which the Bosnian people suffered; but, in a symbolic juxtaposition, alongside the destruction the city seems to be redeveloping, modernising, awaking from ... ...river of the most startling shade of pure turquoise, quite unlike the many polluted waterways of Western Europe) has been rebuilt and is a fantastic attraction in itself. But the whole old city is a great experience. The architecture, the shops, the food, the faces of the local population all betray the fabled mix of Eastern European Orthodox Christianity and Ottoman Islam.
Incidentally, the food (and especially the Bosnian coffee) is fantastic ...

Mrkonjic grad
Advantages: pretty Disadvantages: recovering from war
...and I both serve in Mrkonjic Grad in 1995-96.
Despite the horrific pictures people see on the news Mrkonjic Grad is in fact a delightful small town. Its such a pity it has been depicted as such a dull place. There are lovely quaint hill side houses every where you go. Set in amongst rolling hills and lush forests. In the middle of what is a war torn country, I found it a pleasure spending the winter here. During the summer you have a medditerranean ...

The forgotten corner of Europe
Advantages: Beautiful, interesting, very little tourism, very cheap Disadvantages: Ethnic divisions, poverty, disturbing past
The war ended more than 10 years ago, yet there is still a common misconception of Bosnia as some sort of dangerous, dusty, battle zone. So when I applied to be part of a project in Bosnia in the summer of 2004, I had some worries myself. When my departure date came closer, I started to wonder if I was just a little bit crazy to be travelling there alone. Would I have to cover my head in public? Did they hate English people? Was I going to step on ... ...weeks and I'm glad to say that the answer to all of those questions was a resounding no. I discovered an incredibly beautiful country, recovering from the scars of war, with lots to offer visitors. Bosnia and Hercegovina is in Eastern Europe, South-East of Italy, bordering Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. It has a population of approximately 4 million people. The landscape varies from rolling valleys to dramatic mountains and rushing rivers. Bosnia ...

Not religious, but i went anyway.
Advantages: Great people, great weather, great scenery, and not over commercialised Disadvantages: None really but it can be very, very hot.
...spiritual but not religious.
Medjugorje is an amazing place. It is a place where you would never think I would visit, especially if you have read some of my other opinion, plus it is a place I would have never thought I would go either. If you have never heard of it, it is a place of religious tourism, thousands and thousands of people travel there every year from all around the world. I first heard of it when my brother was dying in hospital after ... ...told me it was from Medjugorje and that Our Lady blessed it. Many miracles and healings have taken place there. A year later my mother decided to go and see it for herself, three weeks before she was going I suddenly decided to go with her, for no real reason. But now I know there were a few sub-conscious reasons, because of the rosary beads the nun blessed my brother with and gave me, to support my mother, as I knew she was going there to pray for ...
