We went to Boston in January so we guessed it would be cold, but the flights were cheap (i.e. would have cost us about the same for a weekend break in Europe) and we had the advantage of Boston shopping, cheap US prices, and no language problems.
But I do not think we really expected it to be as cold as it was but with our big coats, hats and gloves it was not to bad. But the layout of Boston really helped as just across the road from our hotel, well the brochure said hotel but it was more like a motel in town, was a shopping Mall and this was in turn connected to another shopping mall and this approach continued most the way into town so getting around in the warmth of indoors was very easy.
The city itself is not as big as some US cities but it was just the right size for us to cover in the extended weekend so there was no need for car hire (which obviously kept the price down) and as one underground station was opposite the hotel/motel and the other is built into the airport then getting to and fro and the start of the trip with heavy bags was easy (obviously heavier on the way home due to our new purchases)
Other highlight on our trip, when we were not shopping, were walks round Harvard University, trip to the location of the Boston tea party (unfortunately the boat was shut due to the time of year) a meal inside cheers, as you may know only the outside was used in the show but it was a nice meal all the same, for a meal in a look-a-like cheers bars cheers in central London is a good bet and we also we to the science museum which was interesting, we went here on the last day of our trip after we checked out the hotel/motel so we had all out luggage, but this was no problem as they allowed us to store it in the clock room while we looked round.
You might think travelling this distance for such a short time would just end up with you wanting to sleep all the time but we didn't and my theory is that the jet lag never caught up with us, either that or with American twenty four hour opening we were just on UK time for the four days.
