Boston is a great city to spend a few days in, and conveniently sited for day trips into the surrounding area. A tiny city compared to New York, it is much less hectic with a nicer climate. If you want to eat seafood, this is the place to come (if not, don't panic, there are plenty of other options too, with many ethnic restaurants and steak houses). Things to do: go whale-watching (take a warm jumper and camera), definitely worth the money though it is a bit expensive if you want to take the whole family. Do the Boston Duck Tour (tickets and start from Prudential tower), a great way to get your bearings, and much more fun than a standard tour, especially when you make a "big splash" into the Charles river. The aquarium is great for adults and kids, while the wide range of instant food on offer in Quincy market should tempt even the fussiest palate. Go up the Hancock tower at night and eavesdrop on the air-traffic controllers at Logan whilst watching the queues of aeroplane lights waiting for their turn to land (though I recommend not doing this just before leaving as it could be a bit un-nerving!!) The transit system in Boston is great, relatively cheap at $1 per token, so use it to go to Harvard Square and look around; or get off at Central Square and and walk a few blocks to the MIT museum which is both fascinating and cheap. Go to the Union oyster house or Legal Seafoods and eat lobster, go to chinatown and eat noodles, drink Sam Adams Ale and try Boston baked beans (you'll either love them or hate them). A visit to Charlestown is recommended, to seeBunker Hill and walk the freedom trail; the USS Constitution is also worth a look. Take a day trip to Salem (tacky but you have to go anyway) and take a trolley tour, visit the house of seven gables and the great sweetie shop opposite, and buy witch souvenirs. Take the catamaran to Provincetown and look around the museums or go for a leisurely cycle before relaxing on the sand. The major down-side of Boston? The "Big Dig", which has been going on for years and looks set to continue for years. The plan would be to put all the traffic in underground tunnels and convert much of the reclaimed concrete into parkland. It's about $15 million over-budget and has become a tourist attraction in it's own right (how sad is that?!) So if at all possible try NOT to drive, especially to or from the airport as it's a complete disaster zone. Apart from this, Boston is a city in which you can do as much or as little as you like, sightsee, shop, or simply relax on the common with the bronze ducks, and watch the world go by.
