Advantages: Lots of history, quite well preserved Disadvantages: Admission charges
Pickering Castle can be found just outside the town centre of Pickering, a quaint little market town on the edge of the North York Moors NationalPark. It is clearly sign posted from the middle of the town, but be warned when I visited here a few weeks ago some prankster had turned around the sign and I went trudging off along the road towards Malton (on foot) for about a mile in completely the wrong direction.
I did eventually find the castle, although even though the land around here is quite flat it is not, unlike most castles visible from afar. Pickering Castle is located just to the north of the town centre, just beyond the point where a modern post-war housing estate ends.
The castle is a typical motte and bailey style fortification, characterised by a large mound of earth (the motte) on which the castle stands. This is ...

We were entertained by the flying foxes hanging in the trees; every now and then one would fly across to another tree then fold himself up and hang from a branch again. They are really quite large bats but they d not seem ...
Advantages: Great exercise, stunning scenery Disadvantages: None
Devon has two moorlands, Exmoor and Dartmoor. Dartmoor is in the centre of Devon and is 368 square miles. It is rich in history and Archaeologists have found remains of Neolithic and early Bronze Age, Hound Tor also has a deserted Medieval Village on its slopes.
Although over half of Dartmoor is private land it is designated 'access land' and walkers are free to roam pretty much anywhere. The military uses parts of Dartmoor to train and also firing ranges, they have since the Napoleonic wars. Red flags fly in these areas when firing is taking place.
It is perfect for a relaxing walk with the dog, or you can take it seriously and make your way up the many granite tors. There are lots of places to stop whilst driving and take in the breath-taking views with roadside car parks. In the bigger car parks by popular Tors there is usually ...
