Glorious Gate

Advantages: unique in the world

It's made of sandstone, it has twelve Doric columns and a Quadriga (made by Johann Gottfried Schadow) on the top of the roof facing east where the castle was, four horses draw a carriage with the goddess of victory in it. The female figure was not always the goddess of victory, she started as the goddess of peace, but Napoleon took the Quadriga ... more

Where East met West

Advantages: It IS Berlin
Disadvantages: None

...it its proper name, Das Brandenburger Tor is one of those sights that you have to see when visiting Berlin. Can there be anyone who isn't familiar with it? From war newsreels to Cold War thrillers, and from music concerts to the jubilant scene when the people from the east walked through to seize freedom as the wall collapsed, the Tor has played a pivotal role in the shaping of modern day Europe. It's one of those places from which history literally ...
...a close look reveals hundreds, if not thousands, of pock-marks; the result of the ferocious street fighting which took place around it at the end of WWII. (These have been repaired now, but the effects are visible enough and it's not hard to imagine the scale of the battle). Standing under the gate, the prospect is stunning. To the east lies the Pariser Platz which leads into the splendid boulevard of Unter den Linden, one of the classiest streets ...

the gate of peace

Advantages: a powerfull symbol of peace
Disadvantages: covered right now for renovation

...not know it, the famous Brandenburger Tor. The symbol of Berlin, the symbol of a once divided and now reunited (or reuniting) Germany and Europe. I - as a native german and former Berlin inhabitant - want to give you a short impression about what this gate means to me and some facts about it as well. The Brandenburger Tor is situated in the city center of Berlin, in the hotspot of the city. Following the avenue "Unter den Linden" (wich means: walking ...
...what in my opinion the Brandenburger Tor stands for. It's situated in very own location in the world and it could be a symbol to the whole world. It was misused many times in german history by the forces of evil. So in the Third Reich by the nazis or in the times of cold war. But now it's up to us to make it again to a symbol of good. Please not: The gate is renovated right now and so you will not have a good look on it. Its covered to keep the ...

The Gate of Division and Unification

Advantages: A must-go place in Berlin, good for those interested in history of Germany
Disadvantages: no

Close to the Reichstag is the Brandenburg gate, which has become the most important landmark of Berlin. Remember the video that was shown before the match begins for World Cup 2006? It was featured in there. It is not just a scene for Berlin itself, personally I think it is the best monument that represents Germany. It used to be the scene of milliary processions and parades. When the Wall went up, it was left in a no-man's land. It is also one of ...
...Therefore, it has its place in history in Germany as the gate where the West and the East side of the city came together again and symbolizes both the division and unification of Germany. Personally I would love to come back to visit again- a reminder of the importance of looking back at our history. On the road close to the gate, you can also see a distinctive marking of a line which shows you where the wall used to seat-a really amazing scene. ...

Berlin! Berlin!

Advantages: Germany's capital and most interesting city
Disadvantages: a bit too large, distances too long

and up and then look down into the assembly room where the politicians have their meetings (Who isn't listening but reading a newspaper? Shame on them!) and then walk up the ramp inside the cupola to the top. It's free of charge, my advice is to go there early or very late (admission from 10am until 10pm, open until 1am), the view of the cityscape is striking, I remember one summer evening when the city was still the largest building site worldwide with thousands of huge cranes and behind them a romantic sunset, unforgettable and never repeatable! The cupola has become the No 2 tourist attraction in Germany after the Cathedral in Cologne and it's closing ranks. About 100m away from the Reichstag is the famous Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) topped by a triumphal chariot, the Wall ran between the two buildings, the Reichstag was in ...

Church of Rememberence - don´t forget the past

Advantages: Remember what happened - forever
Disadvantages: found none

Going to Berlin and being interested in history you´ll certainly want to visit the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. It´s on the Breitscheidplatz, and next to it is the Europa Center. Probably it´s one of the most interesting places to go, you should see the Brandenburger Tor and the Gedächtniskirche, the "Church of Rememberence". It´s rather a monument than a church, as it was rebuilt during the last years. It was built around 1890 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as he wanted to set a monument remembering his predecessor KaiserWilhelm I. It was a splendid church which was destroyed a lot during WW II. Since this time it has been left as a ruin to be a monument for the senseless destruction that happens in any war (on all sides of the involved). They didn´t manage to rebuild the original building which was also not intended, but they ...

Turm with a view

Advantages: Great panoramas of the city
Disadvantages: Busy!

Unter den Linden through the Brandenburger Tor and on to the open spaces of the Tiergarten, each panorama opens up spectacularly, if you can shove your way in for a decent look, that is! OK, I'm exaggerating a little. It was very busy, but a little patience was soon rewarded with those marvelous vistas. After all, it's only a tiny minority of people who think it's fun to stand looking at the same view for an eternity, most have a quick look, take a photo, then move on. Of course, if it all gets a bit much for you, there's the possibility of retiring to the Telecafé for a light refreshment. However, if, like us, you're there before 10am, the possibility is not just remote, but im. Yep, although visitors are allowed in from 9am, the café doesn't open until 10am. Nice bit of planning there. So, after a wander around and a look in all ...
